Going to try a Pokemon game - DS or 3DS?

Played a bit of Pokemon blue on the Gameboy back in the 90s. Haven't touched the series since?

I'm going to give it another try? Would you recommend the DS ones or 3DS for someone with some idea of the concept of Pokemon but no recent playing?

Go for one of the latest ones on 3DS mate, X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are both great. It's very easy to pick up and play so I wouldn't worry about the fact that you've been out of the loop since Red/Blue. The complex breeding and stuff doesn't come into play until the endgame anyway.

One thing though - you'll have a lot more fun if you have at least one friend to battle and trade with. While the online infrastructure stuff is pretty good at this point, it's still significantly enhanced by a bit of good old link-up action.

I would say go for X or Y. The DS ones were quite bad and X/Y felt genuinely intuitive and refreshing.

Are any of the GBA ones any good?

Yep they are. Although some have battery issues that are worth checking about if you can find info. I know my Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald give me battery warnings that stop some elements working. Not sure if it's the same for Fire Red or Leaf Green. Those two are remakes of the original and they look and play great and in my mind are tighter and better experiences than many of the others. That said, I haven't played the 3DS ones so can't compare those.

I would agree with the above; X/Y was a real jump for the series.

The internal battery being dry is totally fine on the GBA generation titles. This just means the internal clock will be wrong, meaning certain events won't be able to occur. You're able to install a new battery and not lose your save though due to the type of non volatile sRAM that the GBA carts use.

Speaking objectively, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald is the best generation of Pok?mon hands down. Excellent titles.

Cool. Also google tells me that Fire Red and Leaf Green are not affected by this issue because they didn't have an internal clock in those games.

                  Thanks - will look for a second-hand copy of X or Y

I am in a similar situation, but decided to go for the new 3DS Omega one, purely due to some vouchers from work that I had to use up.
                    Seems quite good so far.
