My very first 'multiplayer' experience was Doom on a LAN at my mates work one weekend - not technically "online". At the time this was absolutely mind blowing - reckon we did about 16 hours with beers and pizza......Apart from that in terms of consoles, R6 Vegas was the first I played the crap out of online, to this day (as I've said many times on the forum before) it is still the best online co-op experience for me - I'm hoping the new one is as good.

First proper experience of online gaming was Wireplay on PC, playing EF2000 and Duke Nukem 3D.

That being said, I didn't really get into it until I played Tribes 2 via broadband in 2002. That was a real eye-opener.

The sad thing is that I feel online gaming was very ambitious years ago, and sometimes even less so, now. Games like Tribes 2, Planetside and such tried quite big and bold new things. Games like Halo 3/Project Gotham 2/World of Warcraft came about and "perfected" online gaming in their respective genres (i.e. found the formula between implementation and making money) and since, many games have been so similar.

It must have been wireplay I was remembering as the other major gaming service, it remember playing a lot of Big red racing on it (as shareware)

Yep same here I used to dabble with a modem on the Amiga.

Diablo was the first game I actually played online, followed shortly by Quake 2. Years and years and years of Quake 2. Oh god, so much Quake 2.

First online game was Quake. Played 1v1 with a friend who destroyed me. It put me off for a while but I got into multiplayer with the Xbox and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I'd always heard about the toxic, foul mouthed teenagers online and in my first online game of Wolfenstein I got called a gay n*gger. Perfect. I got the epitome of online play in my first game.

Since then my best multiplayer memories are:

                • Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow (best MP game ever)
                • Chromehounds with the NTSC-UK crew (Silvergun was a great commander class player)
                • Spending a day in Lost Planet lobbies with Japanese players (no aggro or shouting or swearing (that I could tell))
                • Team GRAWsome (GRAW with Capcom Suicide, Spatial et al)
                • Resident Evil 5 coop
                • My regular Friday night gaming crew. Every Friday night my fiancee and I get online with a couple of friends to cause chaos in GTA Online and dip into Borderlands and Minecraft.

Can Chromehounds still be played online? Is there a point in getting it if not? I've always been tempted by the game but never got a X360 until much later.

No, it was switched off a long time ago.

However, the latest Armored Core games use a similar online system.

Thanks chopemon, I knew there were more I loved.

GRAW on 360. This was brilliant. As was R6Vegas and it's Terrorist Hunt. Looking forward to the new ubi shooters actually.

Lost Planet was also great. The clunky, roll-around, conquest-em up.

If I'm remembering correctly, my first online title due to lack of interest beforehand, was Chu Chu Rocket on Dreamcast. I dabbled with a couple of other games on the system but it never worked well enough to warrant bothering with. In terms of breaking through and making me start playing online much more commonly it would probably rest on a belated purchase of Modern Warfare on PS3.

Online never really clicked with me until voice chat started. I dabbled but grew bored. It still felt soulless.

Had some great times on Lost Planet 2, Resi 5 and Fifa.

Socom us navy seals was great fun back in the ps2 days, I remember signing up to the network beta trials which gave you the game a headset and a network adapter for ?60. it was quite a tense game as you only got one life with no respawns and once you where dead it put you in an online lobby called the deadzone where you could chat over coms and wait for the next round to start. It was a very social game so I joined a clan called old age playstationers who I still play with to this day.

The sony beta community is still running and we still get new games to test. I must of had hundreds of games over the life of the PS2, PS3, and now the, ps4 with bloodborne, little big planet 4, and driveclub being the most recent stuff we got to try early.
