Any tennis games coming, like, ever again?

Can only remember Mario Tennis on the 3DS recently. Have companies stopped making tennis games? Are there any in the pipeline for the Bone or PS4?

If not, it's a pity. Tennis games, like golf games, age quite well and survive the generation leap much better than, say, football games, in my opinion. But then again, they almost dried up on the last generation too. I can see why they don't need annual updates, but it is a great shame there are so few of them now.

I'd like to hope there will be another Virtua Tennis as I love them, but with SEGA's current woes I won't hold my breath.

If anyone wants a good newer tennis game than Grand Slam Tennis 2 on PS360 is the one. Miles better than Virtua Tennis.

I briefly tried out Grand Slam Tennis 1 on the Wii with motion plus and advanced controls and that was very impressive and realistic. It's true there does seem to be a lack of tennis games recently and I wouldn't have high hopes for Sega doing anything with the Virtua Tennis series.

This makes me think about modern gaming. Recently on my blog I said something similar about Snowboarding games; once upon a time, they were a whole GENRE. There were dozens of them in the 32/64-bit era. Ditto for Tennis games, even Golf games.

These days, it just seems as though so many genres I used to love barely get one game per console.

Probably because gamers have been so conditioned to play sports and fps games that nothing else gets a look in.

Most sports games have also gone that way - look at the wealth of football games on PS compared to the choice of FIFA or PES we have now. There are a myriad of FPS games, though, as you say.

On the subject of the lack of football games, are there any arcadey football games out there? Something that has realistic looking players but is basically a button for pass, shoot, tackle, slide tackle. Something that simple. I can't be arsed with PES and FIFA and all these skills that I can't remember the combinations of.

Yes that's something I wished they'd have changed in Virtua Tennis and hitting the ball into the net too but they were intent on keeping things accessible for the new player. You can still end up hitting the ball out occasionally though like when retuning a big serve or a big shot. Virtua Tennis 2 was brilliant and the last game to really move things forward. It's my all time favourite for serve vollying. After that it got worse in various ways and introduced nothing new. I never tried out the last game though.

How does Grand Slam Tennis 2 compare with the first game? I like the individual animations of the first game. Sampras in particular really served and struck the ball in the same style as he does in real life. Also having other serve and volley legends like Edberg, Becker, Stich and McEnroe.

I never played the original but the variety and shot control is what I like about 2.
The default controls use analogue sticks to hit the ball and it works superbly. You can use all degrees of the stick for positioning, pretty much up to 80+ degrees to hit sharp court angles.

Going one step further, I watched Ping Pong again last month and was thinking how great it'd be to have another table tennis game like the R* one on 360. I don't think there's anything like that, though. I loved Wii Sports Resort table tennis but I'm not getting a Wii.

That was a fantastic game. It's only ?11.99 on games on demand... kinda tempted.

I loved Ping Pong too and that dirty bastard Shido Nakamura.
