C'mon, some in the fighting game community look down on MK and KI (I certainly do) but even I recognise that there are tiers in the genre, and Clayfighters is definitely on a far lower one than KI and MK.

clayfighters 63 1/3 i recall was influenced a lot by killer instinct though with more madder combos

If Capcom's best people were behind it, it might be OK. In reality, it's destined to be as bad as the originals. One of those series of games, where you admire the artists creativity, but also feel sorry for them, because the game design is poor. Too many devs had interesting ideas and good artists, but couldn't deliver well-crafted gameplay.
