Weirdly some people buy their games because they play and enjoy them. A military themed run and gun isn't exactly original but also not a direct Metal Slug rip off. Taking inspiration from the classics isn't a bad idea.

Capcom made "1942" which sees you effectively piloting a US plane against Japanese air forces. Okay, it's not explicitly stated, but it's pretty obvious from in-game clues. Then next year they released "Commando", which is essentially a US soldier versus German forces...

NDS Commando: Steel Disaster?
