Obscure DS imports retrospective: Part 2 (Mite wa ikenai みてはいけない)

More DS related fun today, this time something horror related.

Todays game comes from 2008 and is made by Dimple, an unusual game called Mite wa ikenai. Roughly translated means don't look. With a creepy ass cover like that i can't help but looking, it just reeks of creepyness.

    Strange scratched out kanji...check
Creepy eye looking through a hole...check
    Creepy ass Japanese doll ghost...check

So what kind of game is this you may ask, it's kind of a compilation of mini horror stories where you have to exorcise the ghosts from the cursed phographs. First you get a short story about something creepy happening and then the resulting photograph appears for you to examine. Hidden in the photographs will be things not quite right, hands that shouldn't be there, faces that appear in the strangest of places, unusual shadows in the backgrounds. You have to use the stylus to burn out the cursed parts, on the top screen will be blue souls floating about this is how many curses the photograph holds. You have until the candle burns down to get rid of them all, each time you screw up the candle will burn down quicker as punishment. And here is the small problem with the game, the game is very strict where you can and can't burn. Go a tiny bit over or under and the game will tell you that you are wrong even if you are in the correct place. It's a lot easier to do with a stylus than a mouse on an emulator but it's still pretty strict. If you need to burn more then a green face will appear to tell you giving you a clue that you are in the correct area at least.

Some of the photographs are genuinely creepy and that grainy look to some of them helps get you into the mood, some of the things are very well hidden, faces so faint that you never spotted them till you had it pointed out. On the ones that you do screw up on will eventually cycle back around for another try, here's some footage. Love the title screen music it's wonderfully creepy.

Also in the game is an adventure mode where you explore a house and follow the story as creepy goings on happen around you, when you complete each chapter it unlocks a special photograph for you to have a go at removing the curse from, also photographs you complete in the main game will appear in the album in this one with the solutions circled around for reference.

The DS doesn't have a huge amount of horror games so this one i found a welcome addition, i have had loads of fun with it even if sometimes the detection is a little off.

Think I may like this (as long as it's not too scary)

an idea- perhaps on each game you could put how much the language barrier would be a hindrance?

I'll have a go at trying to gauge the language difficulty but it's kind of hard to rank some games. This one for example you'd totally miss out on the creepy story setup before each photograph but the game is reasonably playable it can be completed without been able to read anything, even the adventure mode you just go from room to room watching the story unfold.

Really like the art and the music but the strictness of the burning looks infuriating.

It's a lot harder using a mouse over a stylus when trying to be precise i was all over the place, ideally a capture card for my ds would be better for recording but have to make do with an emulator.

              The CD is as follows

First track - a female narrator tells what sounds like a scary story, with some sound effects (piano noises, a car crash and some dramatic monster approaching riffs) with a male voice actor, who is obviously in a pickle. He has his niece with him.

Four more tracks of the same sort of thing, although with male and female narrators, and sometimes female characters as well. I listened to all of the first track, then skipped through the last four just to see what they were.

Probably not worth bothering with, although I'm keeping it just in case I end up selling this game on.
