Obscure DS imports retrospective: Part 4 (Minna no conveni みんなのコンビニ)

If you ever wanted to experience the thrills of working in a Japanese convenience store but never had the chance, well fret no more as in 2010 Taito allowed you to live out your minimum wage dreams with, Minna no conveni.

It feels very much like cooking mama, in fact it feels so much like it that i class this as an unofficial spinoff. Even the characters have that mama game feel to them, so your grandfather has been rather slack in the conveni running department and his store is run down and hardly has any customers. It's your job as free family labour to turn things around, when you first start out most of the shelves are empty, as you play and win the minigames it will attract customers and with more customers you will start getting new display cabinets and products. All the display cabinets and fixtures in the conveni are minigames, all of them pretty simple but rather fun.

Filling, serving, cleaning, more filling, serving again, maybe shuffle the magazines. You can basically play any minigames you want but when you start seeing a shelf looking empty it's best to play that game to stock it back up as the more people that come in the more you will eventually be able to upgrade also some have a multiplier bonus if you play that minigame while it's still active you'll get that many more customers added when you win the minigame. As the game goes along you can upgrade the size of your conveni and also arrange all the layout how you like as well. The game has a nice design feature for customisation. You can change the look of quite a bit from the colours of all the walls inside and the sign out front.

This was the boring pink default conveni design you start with.

Decided mine was going to be a seven eleven conveni so i redesigned the sign and shop colours, ahh much better.

As you get further into the game customers will come in asking for certain items, if you can select the right shelf and win the minigame they will get added to the list. This is probably the only tricky part as they give you clues about what they are after, obviously in Japanese it's a bit tricky but you can totally beat the game without this bit.

Easily playable in Japanese, all of the minigames are easy to work out.

I've wanted a copy of this ever since I first hears about it!

I could never find a copy when in Tokyo though.

Might be time to have a another look online and try and get it for a good price.

Cheapest i have found it used on ebay is about ?13 or if you have access to buying from amazon Japan there are used ones starting at 600 yen. New copies on amazon are around 4000 yen it seems to have held it's value a bit for new.

Fun game though, addictive once you start making your conveni expand and tailoring it to how you want it looking.

I think it was Briareos I sent it to as Secret Santa one year.

The 640 yen is the cart only, as are most of the cheapest ones. There's one at 740 yen + 350 shipping which is complete although it says there is a scratch on the other side and some marks to the case.

Played quite a bit of this yesterday. It felt more like a collection of mini games rather than giving me the feeling I was actually in a convenience store, but the games are very addictive. I'm not very good at the checkout one - rubbish at stopping the revolving wheel to give the customer a spoon, set of chopsticks etc for their food. The others I have managed with no problems so far.

Yeah its more based on minigame fun than accurate conveni simulation. When you start a new game it gets pretty addictive gathering customers to unlock more and more. The higher difficulty levels on each game provide a bit of challenge, the clock goes down so quick that theres no room for mistakes.
