Obscure DS imports retrospective: Part 8 (The kayou generation ザ★歌謡ジェネレーション)

Hmm where to begin, todays offering is a rhythm game something that the DS has no shortage of however this one is kind of different it's both great & repulsive all at the same time.

    Meet the kayou generation

Imagine growing up in Japan in the 70's-80's like with the rest of the world the horrible hair and outfits were everywhere, this game goes to recreate that feel from every aspect. Take another look at the box art above, hideous isn't it? What we have here is what happens when you take a rather good rhythm game and severely beat it with a whole trees worth of ugly sticks, nothing, i repeat nothing has escaped the sticks lol.

However don't be fooled, underneath the munter coating is a really solid & unique rhythm game experience, the kayo generation captures the nostalgia from the 70's-80's as all the songs on it are from that era some of them are classics that have appeared in other music games over the years, quite a lot of songs to choose from 29 in total once you have unlocked them all. Each stage you are in the studio of a tv show, the levels take place on a variety of different backgrounds, all of them ugly and blocky and yet they fit in with the rest of the game perfectly.

The rhythm game system is pretty unique, as the song plays the actual lyrics come down the screen and line up with the yellow boxes that appear, when the two are lined up you tap the box to sing that part ofthe song. If you get the timing dead on the lyrics will be sung perfectly and if you can keep the timing perfect you will be able to link all the song pitch perfect which is really satisfying, however if you get the timing off either too fast or slow then the lyrics get sung out of key and this is where it becomes hard as i end up pissing myself laughing at them & i lose all concentration and screw up badly, it really is hilarious when they warble all over the place. There are also various gimmicks, you won't be just tapping words. At various points in some songs you get markers you have to trace or maybe a backing singer pops up you have to touch or even have to draw a symbol, all of them are pretty fun and add variety as you play. Also on the bottom right of the screen is your fanclub, tapping each of the 3 will activate sound effects to your song as you play if you want to mix it up a bit, more on that later.

The game has quite a lot of customisation options and other fun features, you can change the appearance of the stage you play on for each song if the stage is not to your liking you can also change the appearance of your singer. Get ready for these pics, behold the minger singer creation tool never in any game have i found such a vile selection of templates for character creation no matter what facial parts you choose they will always look repulsive. Must have been the style at the time LOL

JESUS MY EYES, BURN IT WITH FIRE.

Ah perfect, the super butch backup singer look.

When you finish a performance you can rewatch the replay mistakes and all, if it's a performance you are proud of then you can save your replay and watch it back in the replay section in the menu, you can save your replays in 3 slots. There is also a music player section where you can listen to the music without having to play the levels, remember the 3 characters earlier on that you can tap on to add sound effects to the level as you play, there is one other fun section where you can record your own 5 second sound effect which will be mapped to the first guy who usually has the crowd screaming sound effect.

Id actually use my sample in the video but Charles would ban me if you actually heard what i had recorded, it's vulgar and childish and extremely funny. Just think tourettes heckler and you have a rough idea.

Now i apologise in advance for the video, the game was never meant to be played with a mouse on an emulator, you need the speed and accuracy of a stylus on a real touch screen to play this properly so i screw up a lot on the songs so expect to hear off key warbling for a lot of the music lol. But at least you get a rough idea how it plays.

As music games go it's actually a really good one if you can get past the it's super ugly singers/sets, the song selection is pretty good if you like Japanese music and there are a lot of things to unlock in the game, zero language ability needed.

Snapped up. At less than 900 yen for a new one it would be rude not to.

You'll definately get 900 yens worth of fun out of it, at the moment a lot of DS games are still available at a great price. Curious to see what happens in the future with DS games and collectors.

My wife almost wet herself laughing at the cheesy 80s Japanese music. Apparently the figures aren't a bad likeness of the real singers (to the extent that it's possible - graphics aren't the highlight of this game).

It's a lot of fun. I think I prefer it to Ouendan.

Couldn't get my wife off this yesterday. She has now done all the songs.

            It really is fun.

Man your wife sure made short work of that game i'm impressed she managed to get all the songs unlocked so fast hehe, it pleases me to see someone else enjoying it. Despite it's extreme uglyness it's a very fun & solid rhythm game that a lot of people never knew was out there. This is why i wanted to do these features, so some of the more hidden games out there got a chance to shine.

Theres another rhythm game that i shall be covering at some point that uses the exact same game mechanics, pretty sure it's made by the same company as the way they play is pretty unique.

She's very good at rhythm games, so she'll be interested in the one you're covering in future. She loves Ouendan, Taiko no Tatsujin and Space Channel 5, although not interested in Rhythm Tengoku. Apart from that, she plays Katamari, Gran Turismo and Tekken.

Really enjoying this series - thanks for doing them.
