BPX023: MS Opening An EA Sized Lootbox?

The biggest publisher shake-up of all time could be on the cards, if Microsoft ends up buying the company behind FIFA and Battlefield.

It's a report, spun from fevered discussion, born from a single sentence, taken likely from a post it on a board from an unproductive brainstorming meeting but the current chatter of choice relates to the idea that Microsoft may be considering a full $35bn buy out of EA.

For now I'm going to set aside the ill informed fan concerns of such a partnership but will instead entertain the notion given it was once considered impossible that they would own Rare.

Microsoft has an issue. Their ip count is low and stale, their platform is fading into last place, generations are extending and there seems to be little in the way of a decisive plan to turn things around. Microsoft seems to be a little aware of the issue and there have been some small moves such as gaining exclusivity on PUBG and their acquisition of Mojang.

However, the purchase of EA would likely cause industry shockwaves the likes of which has never been seen. It's a little much to believe EA would necessarily retain the licenses it currently holds such as FIFA or Star Wars in such an eventuality but the company undoubtedly has a raft of active and dormant ip's in addition to a mountain of resources that MS would benefit from such as DICE, Origin etc.

It would also pull a lot of content away from Sony's console given how large a presence EA is in the industry.

However, though a hostile attempt is theoretical, it's very hard to believe EA would like any idea of being bought out.

As a gamer, how do you think things would pan out if this unlikely buyout occurred and what would it mean to you?

Origin and Windows Store, a match made in heaven! More thoughts when I can post from a computer.

Oooooof. It would be an absolutely typical MS move to buy out THEE most stale catalogue in the industry, a publisher that is solely focused on micro transactions in their games and not games themselves.

      That’ll end well.

This is getting out of control!
The big boys are getting bought up by the bigger boys until there's only one left.

It would certainly steel a march on Sony if FIFA, Madden, NBA live and its other sports games where exclusive to Windows and xbox, not to mention the likes of Star wars Battlefront and the Battlefield series, need for speed, Dragon Age, Anthem ect.

The issue here though is that of lost revenue closing FIFA and other ultimate team games off from the other consoles and making it an xbox and pc exclusive, this would surely damage EA's share price and bottom line as those games are more about the pannia sticker collecting fantasy football side of things these days, isn't it the case that sales at the till are dwarfed by the money they make via ultimate team?

Ive always thought the FIFA license monopoly should be removed form EA and othe teams should be able to use player names and likenesses, much better football games have come and gone thanks to EA having exclusivity.

The problem with this is that when I think of EA, I primarily think of their licensed stuff like FIFA and Star Wars. They've got Battlefield and NFS too I suppose.

It seems hard to believe that if they became platform exclusive they could continue to retain the FIFA and Star Wars licenses, at least not without significantly renegotiated terms. I have no idea of how these deals function, but my guess would be that it involves an overall licensing fee for a set period, alongside a per-unit royalty.

With platform exclusivity causing an inevitable significant drop in overall sales for the franchises, I don't think FIFA and Disney would tolerate the associated drop in royalty payments. That means that EA/Microsoft would be paying out significantly more to keep those licenses - or FIFA and Disney may not even entertain the idea of platform exclusivity, and may take their business elsewhere to Activision or similar.

Without the licensed stuff, there's still some meat on the bones, but I'm not sure if it would be enough to justify a risky $36b outlay.

Cmon this is FIFA they only care about money, that's how we are having a World Cup in Winter and in a oil rich country and they have been plenty of single format Star Wars games not least the Rogu e Squadren series . Can't see the deal myself and would imagine MS buy up Playground games instead

Microsoft are still buying companies, so it's not unthinkable:
Microsoft acquires PlayFab, accelerating game development innovation in the cloud

"Today, I am pleased to welcome PlayFab to the Microsoft family. PlayFab is a complete backend platform provider of services to build, launch and grow cloud-connected games. PlayFab’s tools are designed to be used by game developers across all platforms (mobile, PC and console). This acquisition extends the investments and work we’ve done on Microsoft Azure to provide a world-class cloud platform for the gaming industry." said Kareem Choudhry - Corporate Vice President, Gaming at Microsoft

"This will enable us to start construction of our neural net-based conscious group mind and artificial general intelligence system, called SkyNet" he did not go on to say.

Eh, so are you saying FIFA would go for it or wouldn't?

                  I think you're saying they wouldn't...so we're in agreement. I think.

Nah. EA shareholders won't let it happen.

Now, if it did happen...let's talk Dead Space and Black!!

Given that FIFA couldn’t give a tosh about the football fan, I very much doubt they care about the gamer. It’s all about money to FIFA. So if a world cup can go to Qatar the game can sure as hell go to MS, as long as MS pay the cash.

As much as anyone buying EA sounds a bit unlikely I almost want Microsoft to do just to see what the fallout would be...

There is more to MS than XBox so there is a possibility, like with Minecraft, that exclusivity wouldn’t be part of the plan.

Can't see it, even if MS have more than enough cash to do it and its not like Lucas Arts, NFL, FIFA give a toss over the consumer and gamer with the deals they've done in the past and present .

I rather see MS buy the likes of Playground Games, Ninja Theory and also strike some deals with FromSoftware, SEGA and Mistwalker and get some solid AAA Japanese developed exclusive games back on its system like the OG Xbox and 360 days. If it must buy a massive Studio I love it to be Ubisoft and its multi player games are more in line with MS style I feel too

It'd be awesome if they struck a deal with FROM for them to can the project three years in. That would be a great thing for gamers.
