    Dynasty Warriors 9

Dynasty Warriors 9 is getting some mixed reviews, where some love it and embrace the open world but others say it's a step back

"Dynasty Warriors 9 is a fun and fresh take of the series with the familiar 1 vs 1000 action people expect but frame rate issues and no multiplayer component keep it from reaching it's full potential."

"The musou genre needed new ideas - but reinventing it as a shoddy open-world game wasn't the answer."

"This is the first time Dynasty Warriors has made it to an open world, but unfortunately it has also resulted in a product that is bloated and feels dated in term of the open world design. It is a good step forward for the series but it needs a lot more tweaks in order to remain relevant for any potential future entries."

"Dynasty Warriors 9 is so bad it could completely destroy your faith in the series."

The open world seems pretty big, though, taking a whole hour to cross the map on horseback (sprinting as much as possible), crossing cities, snowy mountain passes, scenic canyons, and even jungles populated by tigers. Since you probably don’t want to sit and watch an hour of riding, below you can watch a video accelerated by four times, which shrinks the duration down to fifteen minutes.
In order to see just how big the open-world map of Dynasty Warriors 9 is, DualShockers rode diagonally across the land for a whole hour.

While conceptually there's some nice stuff there, a Musou game with no multiplayer is one that I don't buy. Proper campaign splitscreen is very core to my love of the games.

Actually looking forward to Hyrule Warriors on the Switch for this reason.

Yeah, I had a flick through about 4 reviews and searched on the page for "co-op" and nothing came up.
That alone is a massive step backwards.

Not so much a "step backwards" I guess; I think there are more games without it than with it. Quite a few of them don't have multiplayer (some of the spinoffs in particular) and for those that do, some of them don't have proper split-screen co-op, they just have a selection of multiplayer modes where you don't play through the actual campaign.

That being said, I've only bought the ones where they were proper co-op splitscreen. To me the DW games were like a scrolling fighter; they really need co-op.

This series is becoming abit ‘now that’s what I call music’
