I actually know very little about headphones and external DACs, but I'm definitely interested. I've always stuck on the amp and speakers side of things.

What's curious about the PS5 is that it looks like Sony are focusing on a proprietary 3D audio standard. I wonder what the conversion into more standard amp formats will sound like, and how much, if anything, you'll be missing.

If you really do need the official headphones they offer to fully access the format, that would be kind of insane - because I'm sure they sound pretty good, but they're obviously going to be a very long way from audiophile quality. It's also a bummer if you've already invested in great speakers or headphones.

No matter what will happens, personally I'll end up using my amp and speakers, just because I didn't upgrade that long ago and love the sound of them. Interested to see what I'll lose by doing that though.

You can find some more expensive ones yourself if you're interested. It's totally valid (and interesting, to me at least!) to be into high end headphones, and I have absolutely no clue why you're having a go about it. It just kills interesting conversations on the forum when you do this.

Headphone AMP/DACs don't currently use HDMI.

Could you use something like THIS to extract the audio to optical for your headphone set up if Sony don't make provision for it?

I don't know about all this fancy gear which cost more than I will ever have to spend on toys... But I've enjoyed the 3D audio offerings on Xbox so far for headphones (Dolby Digital and Windows Sonic or whatever it was called). I've got a fairly decent set of noise cancelling over ear cans and I used to just be lazy and use Bluetooth to the from my TV but wiring then up to the controller and using these codecs is something else.

I'm no audiophile but it's pretty amazing depending on the game implementation.

If Sony is doing tempest like this for all games on PS5 and MS pushes DTS:X or similar for headphones then they'd good enough for me.
