The 80s that's cool too nostalgia never goes out of fashion but this seems very half arsed, a bit of clever licensing could of really elevated this and brought in a bit of sponsorship money too, real arcade machines, forgotten 80s brands, and movie parodies would have had youtube and twitch falling over themselves to cover it..........

Fortnite is popular with the younger and casual market its fast, its polished, and well supported by the devs. PUBG takes the older gen and realism shooter and is massively popular. Then theirs this early access half arsed, half way house that's buggy as hell at present! you have to ask who is this for?

It's happening right before my eyes. 80s nostalgia is ceasing to be cool, or even ironically cool. This is how it happens.

It's weird and slightly inexplicable feeling but I can't help but feel a little bit put out by this game. It is a cynical last throw of the dice rather than putting something original or different out. They have clearly used their FPS experience and tech to quickly throw together a MP BR game with a cash/MTX store. And then release under the banner of early access to avoid criticism.

Whilst all of this is pretty normal business behaviour, it doesn't feel quite right that they basically abandoned their customers on Lawbreakers and moved on immediately (and they weren't honest about this). As a multiplayer only game with no bot support Lawbreakers is a complete waste of money as there's no player base to even play it properly. Yet it's still up for sale.

EDIT: Also worth noting that Nexon who published and helped fund development of Lawbreakers (and are and investor in BossKey) didn't want to fund anything towards this, so this is entirely self-funded/published: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...-battle-royale. Will be interesting to see if this is a success or not.

I'm surprised they haven't turned law breakers into a free to play loot box shooter like Paladins, if a derivative mess like that can pick up a dedicated following then this should do fine, looking at vid's it seems like a solid shooter with its own twist, it's a lot more vertical and faster moving than overwatch too. you can placate the people that bought it with a ton of free loot boxes easily and its a win win as they currently cant play it as it's player base is in the bin.

I found the game very to awkward to play - it's very niche and plays way too fast for my skill level.

I just didn't find it fun at all, so I'm not sure making it free will help that much, that crowd is mostly playing Overwatch.

                My mind immediately went to:

Honestly, Fortnite is solid enough but even it isn't an amazing PUBG clone. However its team did what was needed and were the first to adapt to a growing hit having identified the console shaped hole in that games market, as such they've reaped the benefits. This is just one of no doubt many titles we'll get that dedicate themselves to the concept but fail, like those belated Overwatch clones. It's really poor that CliffyB seemingly has no vision at all for his studio, it'll no doubt be in the news in future but for its closure.

Radical Heights isn’t Cliffy B’s first Battle Royale game. LawBreakers started off with 100 players online and very quickly only had one left.

I think Paladins is at least regarded as the better game. Although everyone said they should go f2p ultimately you need a certain size player base, particularly as you rely on hooking that small percentage of whales and spenders. And I think that's why they had no choice to go b2p + MTX, because when the player base is so small f2p wont work either. I think Lawbreakers was done from the start no matter what business model they went with. It just wasn't good enough with no USP or originality in an overcrowded market.

They probably have massive debts with no cash flow so can't even afford to put one dev on Lawbreakers but to leave it as they have done is scummy. Give it out for free or something. No one is going to care a year from now.

With this BR game I guess they have to hope the 80's game show inspiration is enough to stand out. I suspect like you guys they won't last long but who knows.

Yeah I think fuse and Superman Falls, sum this up perfectly, unless they can somehow steal a chunk of Fortnite and PUBG players, this is going to go no where fast. Surely the 80s look is a bit dated for the younger generation now?

It's done reasonably well on Twitch this week, I think in part because of the big Fortnite server crash that's knocked that game out for a couple of days, but also because I'm assuming BossKey have paid streamers to play it. I know they did a promotion with Ninja on Twitch to play LawBreakers, so it's probably the same thing they did again to promote the game.

But yea, it's real test is where it is a few months from now. Will it bring in enough Whales/Spenders to make the company solvent. And again I can't help but feel it won't too, but you never know for sure with these f2p games and a lot of them do carve out a successful market for themselves.

But as said I don't like how they have treated their existing consumers on LawBreakers and I think they need to do something to right that wrong and reasonably quickly.

Looks very gaudy (I know, 80s, but it can look good if done right). I'm not feeling that art style at all.

And it is over for Boss Key Productions: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl...ctions-closure

Cliff Bleszinski announced today via Twitter that Boss Key Productions has effectively closed. This came just over a month after the news that Boss Key would cease work on its first and most notable release, LawBreakers.

In his statement, Cliff Belszinski says battle royale game Radical Heights was "last-ditch attempt" to save studio after LawBreakers struggled.

Hopefully everyone quickly gets a job, hopefully with studios that have the first idea of what project to make without just throwing stuff at the wall haphazardly and hoping it sticks for a quick quid
