In the Apple vs Epic battle, the judge has ruled that Apple is free to control payment methods on its iOS app store... however, it also ruled that as part of that control Apple cannot bar publishers and developers from linking to external payment portals from within apps.

This might be significant. It's also the reason you can't buy Kindle books on iOS (you can read them, but you have to buy them via your computer/another device).

Ha. If devs think every user is going to sign up to the devs own payment processing outside of ios they have another thing coming. As for Eipc, fortnite is still banned from the ios store with no hope of coming back, the judge deemed Apples banning lawful in the end, which is a good thing.

Apple will just change their business model now for ftp games accordingly, not processing your payments through ios? Ok you go to pay a store hosting fee for being there now.

Thing is, Apple keeps 30% of the revenue for iOS transactions. If developers think they'll retain more than 70% of the users...

Basically if they lose 25% in the transition then they make 5% more.

Right? If devs don’t like it then either,
A: go build your own phone empire & app store, and customer base.
            B: don’t sell on it.

Makes me laugh that people think there entitled to more of something they did nothing to build.

That's not how governments manage monopolies, though. Companies know that if they get too big, too successful, they'll be broken up for the public good. It stifles business to have something at the top taking 30% of everyone's revenue.

It's a good thing that Epic, or anyone else can do this.

Sadly that's closed systems for you. At some point Apple could do the same thing on the Mac. They won't, but they could. So could Microsoft with Windows, even Ubuntu could. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all do it on their consoles and always have done.

Oddly, Valve aren't (with Steam Deck). To be integrated into their store then yeah, they take a cut, but you can install your own stuff from outside Steam on there.

It's only really a concern when a game becomes as big, or bigger, than the platform. If Fortnite was made originally for iOS I bet Epic would be very happy to pay Apple their 30%, front page game of the Month or whatever when it turned out to be really good, but now it's massive they don't want to give the platform holder any money. Yet they made their own platform and have exclusives on it. So hypocritical.

A few days ago, Sega nnounced they'd be revealing a new RPG at the Tokyo Game Show.
What could it be? Skies Of Arcadia? A new Shining game? Valkyrie Chronicles? Beyond Oasis? Phantasy Star?

Well, today the wait is over, and it'll be a brand new fantasy setting, art seems nice from the teaser, it'll hav a non-linear story, and it'll be available for...mobiles.

Please don't go the Konami way Sega.
