A Google Games Console?

Sony had loads of cash to take on Nintendo and Sega back in the day and sell the PlayStation for a surprisingly cheap price. Google having tons of cash probably means they could deliver a console that beats the competition for a cheaper price. They might even be prepared to take a big loss. It could really stir the market up and be great for consumers.
But if Google managed to destroy the competition and dominate, it could end up being a terrible situation for gamers.Last edited by Leon Retro; 30-06-2018, 00:34.

I think it would be easy for Google to do, it's whether there is a big enough market for a slice of that pie.
MS and Sony have things pretty wrapped up at the moment, but so did Nintendo and sega when Sony swooped in, so anything is possible.
However, history is littered with failed consoles.

Yeah but the selling point of the Switch is the software. You may get a more powerful tablet but it wouldn't be able to deliver the same level of performance that a PS4 or XB1 either at all, or for very long.
My main point with the Switch is that it's an ARM device, which I'm guessing is the route that Google would be going given they already have a mature operating system to use as a backbone.
I just can't see this being any more successful than something like an Ouya.

If Google can't deliver something like the Switch that has quite a bit more power, then people will probably stick to the Switch. It's definitely going to interesting to see what Google delivers.

The main thing about this seems to be that it's likely to be streaming based. I see that as the future of how games are delivered, but we're not quite there yet - and Sony and Microsoft will be offering their own technologies for this (PS Now as it stands essentially seems to be an extended paid beta for the PlayStation version).
Google are well positioned to offer the hardware and infrastructure to make this work, but their problem will be software. We only have to look at MS this gen to see how much even a company that has snaffled plenty of high quality devs (and built its own popular first party franchises) can struggle to fill a pipeline of exclusives.

If google think they can waltz in with crap freemium phone games they have another thing coming, people already have that cross on their mobile.

On the one hand, what it'll it's a proper new console?
On the other, more likely hand the conversations they've been having with people in the industry will be business executives and Google will be giving them what they ask for and that means freemium, loot boxes, streaming games etc. All the crap that is ruining my hobby.

Like a lot of you guys have pointed out, it probably is a tablet of some form which Google will utilise, if they do decide to dip it’s toes in bigger gaming pond.
I welcome the competition, as it may pave the way for a newer way of gaming...
Question is, is there enough room for 4 ‘big boys’ to play in this play ground?
