I suspect that GTAV was a test bed for moving the entire series online and I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if the next one is online-only with no single player (or more likely that the single player experience has been truncated to focus on selling junk to kids).

Just on the flipside of the general hate, I've been playing GTA Online for about eight months now and I've genuinely really enjoyed it.
Yes, there are a lot of scrotes playing, but also some sound players and you can play a lot of it in private sessions, like my friends and I have done.
The core heist missions have been a lot of fun, with a real variety of tasks, not just "go here, shoot things, come back".
We were all proper buzzing the first time we'd finished prepping and drove to the casino to rob it.
It's playing to all my Bond love where I have a submarine with missiles and a car that can turn into a sub or a DeLorean clone that can fly.
The races are also brilliant with some decent and varied courses and classes (bikes, cars, jets, RC cars etc. all handle differently) and the stunt courses are as inventive as the Forza 3 Hot Wheels DLC (now retired from Live!). Plus, you can make your own courses.
It seems easy to have a pop at GTA Online, but I've genuinely had a great time playing it, so have my mates.
We've been addicted to making money, heisting and racing.
We've done some thrilling missions.
We've had some real racing rivalries.
We've laughed until we've cried.
We've spent time together virtually, having fun in this digital playground at a time when we couldn't see each other in person.
To me, that's what gaming should be about.
