    BPX034: Sex

    Yes. SEX.

Now I have your attention, the topic of sex, nudity and typically adult content and subjects within videogames has been taboo for as long as the medium has existed. The age old perspective of games as being something primarily targeted at children has made the inclusion of this content a consistently controversial subject.

It's no secret that violence of a typical bloodied kind has had no difficulty pushing through the boundaries of acceptance. It could be a bit of blood spatter on a wall through to a hellish corridor littered with the bowels of living people pulsating through the walls, games have explored it all from the sensationalist content of Postal through to the grounded delivery of The Last of Us.

If that Coffee is too Hot though...

Sexual content in gaming has often rested more on the titillation end of the scale, from the eye rolling unlockables of BMX XXX through to the skimpy bikini DLC of Dead or Alive, games typically attempt to cash in on this kind of content. More grown up titles may stray into the territory but its inclusion is often cursory, Heavy Rain dared to show us a shower scene whilst Mass Effect rewards relationship questlines with a cheesy and often clothed sex scene that plays at the end of some flirting scenes, an actual grown relationship never really factoring into the game on anything than a token level.

There are other ways of getting your fix but despite gaming having grown into having no shortage of adult fans and yet this one area is failed by games and gamers in a way that other medium have managed to grow beyond being overly limited. There seems to be little interest from gamers in having games seriously reflect the subject and little drive from developers and publishers to push it despite the rest of media telling us sex sells.

The debate on adult content in games can be broad and covers various angles and methods of getting there, the poll above keeps it simple though. Whilst we discuss whether gaming can represent adult content responsibly, the poll asks - Should it?

Personally I don’t have a problem with Sex and nudity as long as it’s contextual and not just there for the sake of it . As you mention thus far it seems to be there purely as titillation , as games evolve and become more cinematic it would seem to be a natural progression ?

Has there ever been a game that handles sex scenes in good way?
Your examples veer from puerile to over-censored.

There must be an Indie game that's been close?

Yeah I think the difficulty with this topic is that I haven’t seen it done. Ahem. I mean, I haven’t seen a game with the maturity required to depict sex in a way that works in gaming. Gaming is about as sexually mature as a Carry On film. Instead of sex, we get a crazy amount of sexualisation and very low brow titilation. Page 3 gaming.

So I don’t know if it has been done. Some Telltale games could have done it perhaps, that type of game at least. But very few games are mature enough. Would be very happy to see it in games though. It’s a core part of our complex experience and could reach higher than Leisure Suit Larry in the right hands. But it would also be a real challenge, either becoming very distracting or just distasteful which could just be comical (press F to blow your load).

I would have much more respect for a dev who tries, even if it misses the mark, than I would the likes of Dead Or Alive Beach Volleyball.

Yes, it shouldn't inherently be seen as wrong for videogames to cover sexual topics.

There are plenty of problems with it, of course - but that shouldn't stand in the way of it being depicted.

Then again I have few taboos/hang-ups about sexual topics. I grew up in a medical household; we never had that bashful thing about nudity that some families have (like stripping down for the doctor, or going naked to an onsen or whatever with other people doesn't bother me).

It's something I find more curious as time goes on given the advancing age of the average gamer. Generally speaking I get it, games easily attract a very video nasty's level of attention from the often ill-informed and publishers want to avoid having their investment dragged into controversy. But we've long been in an era of indie games of varying scale, Steam itself is pretty carefree in terms of what content it allows too so it's interesting how you can see all sorts of game types and budgets get made, all sorts of content from the deplorable through to tales of loss, dementia, love etc and yet this still never seems to be seriously attempted by anyone at any level
