If this KS is real, Kamiya won't dick us about like Yu Suzuki has with Shenmue III. Also, W101 was nowhere near as expensive to develop as Shenmue I and II. Sure it was a risk that didn't pay off but, as Dave said, it'll have a larger audience on Switch. Maybe it'll open the door for games like Viewtiful Joe?

This is a rather nice coincidence because I was playing W101 over the weekend. It really is wonderful and deserves another chance. And, being a port, we already know what the game is like. We wouldn't just be crossing our fingers and hoping.

I'm really surprised at this reaction to the Kickstarter thing.

The W101 was not a successful game. Maybe it was due to the WiiU but still...

Games companies aren't as complex as people think. Imagine you're an investor, and someone comes to you, and they want you to finance the release of their next game. Let's say that's for a game which is known, but wasn't exactly a huge hit. The game's already had one turn at the bat and didn't hit a home run, and now they want to use your financing to release it on a new console, because the bigger install base means that it might be more successful.

You've got a few choices. You can make the game, and risk having it not sell again (remember, you could put that towards something brand new instead). That'd follow a bunch of research, where you might sink some cash only to decide it's not worth even trying; look at what happened recently to Bandai's exploration of the Xenosaga remake, where they had to announce they they are not going to make it.

Alternatively, if you crowdfund it, you can work out how much the port costs and then guarantee its success. Like you don't need to worry about the research; you just ask people "will you buy this? To the point where you'll put the money down right now". If enough people say "yes", then it's worth it, and you make the game. If not enough people say yes, then it's likely the game wouldn't have been successful and you've saved money for other projects.

I'd argue everybody wins; previously a port of W101 probably wouldn't happen simply because the publisher can't justify the risk. You're probably getting stuff you otherwise wouldn't get via this approach. This is the kind of stuff that previously would've just languished on a post-it note in a boardroom and never get beyond a conversation.

I feel like Nintendo has rehashed enough WiiU ports to much success that if Platinum need to even glance at Kickstarter in order to knock out a port on Switch then it means Nintendo have already assessed the game and don't believe The Wonderful 101 can be made into a hit rerelease and passed.

To be honest, much as it deserves more exposure I feel they're right, it's hard to imagine a new release selling much and certainly not on PS4. Platinum dice rolling with Switch, okay, but for any additional format they'd be best making it a budget priced release on Steam. It's shrivel and die on landing on PS4.

It'll shrivel and die no matter what platform. They sent it out to die on a dying platform the first time with absolutely no marketing whatsoever.

            Anyways, this isn't news yet.

              Platinum just tweeted 'Platinum 4'.

So, it's either Bayonetta 4 (before 3 has even been seen).

Or they're one worse than the "Capcom 5" from back in the GameCube days...

                    Viewtiful Joe

                    Bayonetta in 4K?

The correct answer, plain and simple. Established devs like Platinum shouldn't be doing it either.

Watch this become a common thing now that the precedent has been set (if it is true).

With Marmite games like Wonderful 101 it might be the only chance it's got ... with the dev asking fans 'how much do you want it?' before committing.

Precedent? Double Fine have been doing it for years, haven't they?

Took all of about five minutes to reach its goal, but seems the work is all but done and it’s ready to start the publishing process.
