Left Alive (PC, PS4, XBO)

Surprised we didn't have a thread about this:

Welcome to the official SQUARE ENIX website. Find all the latest news and updates about your favourite games and upcoming releases.

Left Alive, seems to be a Metal Gear-esque third-person adventure set in the Front Mission universe, but while I think you can pilot Wanzers, they're not a core part of the game.

I saw a trailer recently I quite liked the look of, so I might take a chance on it. It seems very PS2... But in a good way.

    Did no one buy this?

I missed it entirely from my radar. Only discovered it today due to it appearing on people's worst of 2019 lists.

Watched some videos and I love the look of it. Seems janky but awesome.

Almost all the complaints boil down: "I'm really crap at games and this is too difficult, I want more checkpoints and easier battles to so I see more of the story."

Gah. I regret games ever being compared to films, it brought an influx of lame asshats who should really rather be watching Netflix, not playing something which requires actual dextrous skill. Everyone just wants to play a film with a win button attached.

Has anyone here played it and can comment on what it's actually like? We have big mech battles, crafting improvised weapons, stealth, action, three different characters, and a high difficulty.

I keep seeing this in shops and being drawn in by the Shinkawa cover.

It's in Jim Sterlings 10 ****tiest games of 2019.

I don't like Sterling, so that adds bonus points for me. It's also in Kotaku's worst of 2019 based on Metacritic, and Yahtzee's worst of 2019 video.

All the critics hate it. But then many of them hated Deadly Premonition, and that's one of my favourite games of all time. Also Brigand Oxaca got bad reviews, so did Operation Darkness, and I loved them.

Based on personal experience, I find I can't trust professional critics any more. They praise stuff I hate, and lambaste my all-time favourite games.

Take one for the team and buy it, then write down thoughts.

I was going to say the same to you!

It’s only a tenner new. I might give it a try. It looks interesting if nothing else.

I'm on PC, and it's full price currently on Steam. Also, I've read the Denuvo DRM wrecks your SSD due to excessive writing.

Hey Sketcz; apparently it has really specific problems. In one of the top 10 worst videos - I don't remember which one - the guy had footage of stuff like enemies standing in front of you who don't see you, then enemies facing away behind a wall who do see you. It's just meant to be a buggy mess.

People have it on the "top 10 worst" apparently because it's rare you get a game out of something like S-E that is simply this buggy... Plus it generates a lot of ire from the beleaguered Front Mission fanbase who haven't been very well treated; though admittedly they kept the association low-key with this one (like they didn't call it "Front Mission: Left Alive").

I'm still planning to pick it up, but some day in the future when it's a fiver in CEX.
