Gotta admit, I don't quite get the recent vogue for Quake-1-like FPS solo games.
I can understand their popularity but only as it pertains to pure nostalgia. Quake was not a good single-player game IMO. I actually thought Doom was a far better single-player experience, and while Quake had many cool elements to it, I thought those were very quickly eclipsed by the games that followed, such as Jedi Knight.
Quake was drab, brown-vision... The multiplayer was excellent. Absolutely electrifying, side-splitting laughs were had, it was incredible fun; but the single-player never did it for me.

Asura agree with you on that. Quake was impressive engine/tech rather than strong SP game. It stood out as the first game where I used WASD & mouse, which was really alien at first. Far better MP game.
That said there was that other retro shooter (more DukeNukem style, Strafe I think) and think this looks cool and probably serves a niche.

Yeah quake was overrated for me even at the time i did not like it that much, now days though getting into more retro style shooters like Amid evil being a good one and Bright memory episode 1 which is a bonkers game (made by one person apparently but graphically modern)
When it comes to engines though i am amazed what can be done only found out recently that titan fall 1 and 2 and apex legends used the source engine
