Zelda's artstyle - Not so original?

I don't like to accuse people of copying, but doesn't Wind Waker's art direction look worryingly similar to Sony's old Japan-only PS2 game, "PoPoLoCrois: Hajimari no Bouken"?

    Maybe it's just me.

Looks similar yes, but Wind Waker was probably in development A LOT longer, even though it was released afterwards.

      JESUS!......

before I read your post, I thought you had posted some doctored images of ZeldaWW2, or possibly doctored screens of ZWW, I was fooled, certainly.
Were this gamefaqs, other posters would reply with "pwnd" or some other such reply.

      This warrants further investigation.
I will certainly be looking into that game.

Do you mind if I link some people to this thread? (would be great for a laugh actually, but it may bring some unplaeasant types over this way)

well done man, well done, an interesting point well worth looking into.

      Coincidence? Unlikely!

      EDIT:
DAMN! My plan was foiled, those people on gamefaqs are not as stupid as I thought. I was hoping this joke would fool them all, but sadly, linking them to the pics directly, and claiming they were shots of a new zelda game, didnt work.
They just called me an idiot.

Anyone know of any other gullible people such a joke might work on?

Hurry, by morning theyll be deleted, and I would have lost karma!

damn, they were right, the pink square gave it away.
I was so close to pwn'g the entire gamecube board.

          then again, perhaps not....

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

If I find some others people, gullible enough, Ill be sure to point them in the right directions.

Wow, otaku84 posts on GameFAQs? I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED!!

That does look like Celda, but it looks even more like Ocarina because the graphics are so poor. And Ocarina came first! OMG I win!!

The graphics for Popolocrois are actually very good, very smooth and clean, and impressive for a PS2 game. Your immature comments were not needed.

              I smell trolling.

Are you trying to imply, that my average NTSC-uk post is equivalent to the mass dross that is posted on GameFAQs? ft:

Id like to inform you, that I put a great deal of care and thought into most of my posts here, I use gamefaqs mainly for archaic retro, or info and tips on rare games. Or the occasional FAQ.

I post on GameFAQs, in a slightly more immature manner, because I dont particularly value the site, or my account there, unlike here at NTSC.

I don't see what your problem is, I conduct my posting here in an intelligent manner.

I like to engage in debate, and sure, I'll admit I let my emotions run a little wild, but I resent your tone, your implications, and your apparent trolling Ive seen over the past few days.

If you dont like it, stay away from my posts, or ignore them. But get off my case dammit. ft:

It looks like The Wind Waker because there's a little bloke with blonde hair and a skeleton (which the Zelda games have always had), but the art style is quite different.

Zelda's style is largely influenced by Eyvind Earle's amazing work on Walt Disney's 1959 version of Sleeping Beauty.

I remember being very impressed by the screens I saw of this game in pre-production. I saw the shots at about the same time as I saw JSR tbh. JSR is obviously amazingly done but I was v impressed at the time. I am pretty certain there were shots of this floating around before the PS2 even came out but I could be horribly wrong. For once

                    PS, Hi Kempy!

TWW's artstyle also seems to be inspired by Mary Blair's beautiful artwork from Peter Pan.

Regarding the anime style, did other artists' work inspire you while working on this game?

Mr. Aonuma: While we haven't been inspired by anyone in particular, you could say that because we've all grown up reading manga and watching anime that it probably inspired us to want to create a videogame in a similar style. I don't think I could say that there was one particular inspiration.

Mr. Miyamoto: Actually, we do have some anime fans on the team, but we also have fans of particular movie directors too. We have a mixture of people that helped create this title. Even if they wanted to make a game based on someone's style, we probably wouldn't let them.

"My Neighbor Totoro" impressed me with what they did with the style. That's something I like to look at, to see something within an existing media that is creative and different. That's what we try to do with our products, to take something people have seen and try to do something new with it. It's when you're really able to do something revolutionary within a media that's existed for some time that I think you're able to shock and startle people. That's usually how it is for me. "Laputa" was another one that impressed me.

Mr. Sato: We were very inspired by Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan and an up-and-coming PS2 game called "PoPoLoCrois: Hajimari no Bouken".

I'd also like to add that "ICO" was heavily inspired by a 1975 japanese animated film called "Jack & The Beanstalk" in the west. A little guy in red running around with a short haired princess dressed in white, threatened by a dark queen in a large castle.
