This was so predictable, the second they lost momentum because of covid the show was never coming back, I’ve no idea how much it cost the platform holders to put on a decent show but it would of been astronomical, they can knock an online presentation together for next to nothing in comparison and put the saved resources to better use making actual games, plus all the personnel it takes to set everything up and present that are tied up in the process as well.

Those big live events; people might knock them, say they're old-fashioned, and point to YouTube analytics for the number of people who watch them vs. a Nintendo Direct, but frankly, I think they're missing the point. They're a statement, and as a result, there's an intangible element to them.
The reason to not do them, I'd argue, isn't cost but rather risk. A video presentation can be tweaked and modified up to the last minute, meaning you never have a cringe "1 million troooops" or "giant enemy crab" moment, but obviously a live event can have someone accidentally blurt out "just take it, it will end".
But the moment eveyone stops, the first company to come back will get a huge boost from doing it. And then the others will want to do it. And that's how it goes.

Yep I agree with all of that.
This stuff is cyclical. Anyone who's worked in a marketing department knows that someone senior comes in, wants to sweep everything away and do it their way, then they leave, someone else comes in, does the same thing, blah blah blah repeat ad nauseam. And there are only ever a limited number of ways of doing things so it ends up going round in slow circles basically.

I do miss it, it's clear that SGF is vying to replace it but the difference is deafening. Nothing has ever come close to capturing E3 season during its heyday which is why June has now become more a tale of how disappointing everyone finds it. There was a genuine buzz about it even when hardware etc wasn't being revealed and Direct style videos have become so common place that there's no real fuss when they arrive anymore as they're too much like typical news updates other sites already delivered. Frankly, some of the companies could do with the attention something like an E3 blowout generated drew.
