I think that's what is causing the puzzlement given how quickly hackers were able to get Mario 64 running natively on the Switch using its source code and implement these updates and yet Nintendo hasn't

I saw you could mop up star bits in Mario Galaxy by simply touching the screen which is a nice erm touch.

I haven't played SM64 in ages. I had intended to download it during the dying days of the Wii Virtual Console but forgot to do so. Weirdly enough, part of me is tempted to snag a cheap copy of SM64 DS up for comparison's sake.
It's also been a long time since I played Sunshine and Galaxy. IIRC, I did enough in those games (60 Shines/Stars) to see an ending but didn't do the full 120 completion - will obviously be looking to rectify that asap!

The main thing that gives me pause about this is that emulation is always gonna incur some amount of additional input latency compared to a full-fledged port for the hardware.
Found it, a couple of pages someone mentions hackers have already managed to swap Sunshines rom for other GC games and they ran fine. Will be checking if that's true later.
