Game of the Year 2021 - Round One

We're approaching mid-December so time to begin our long journey through the years new releases to find out what will ultimately be cemented as the greatest game release of 2021

We've been riding through the eye of the pandemic this year with a lot of delayed games leaving us with several spaced tentpoles and a bit more breathing room for smaller scale fare to get noticed at times.

The above list of releases represent the games released from January onward so if it's missing it's likely a game that launched later in the year and will appear in an upcoming round.

Guilty Gear Strive and Metroid Dread?

I think this is the first ever year in my adult life where I didn't play a single game that was released the same year.

I played a shed load of games and completed several like Zelda: BOTW, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Forza Horizon 4 and loads more, but not a single game came out this year that made me want to play it now. Actually, I take that back, Sable was the closest but I've got a few games on the go, so added it to my Steam wishlist.

Maybe next year!

I did not play a single game released this year because there was no new EDF game released this year.

In terms of the games for this first round, the two that were easily the ones that got my vote were Hitman 3 and Bowser's Fury

The Medium is the only game on that list that I’ve played but it’s one of the best this year for me.

I’m pretty sure I’ll end up buying it on PS5 down the line so I can enjoy it at a reasonable frame rate!

Azur Lane Crosswave was released in 2020. Gundam Battle Operation 2 technically in 2018, only the PS5 version in 2021.

I think Yakuza: Like a Dragon was my goty last year, so I’ll have to pick it again. Also Bowser’s Fury was very good.

Metroid Dread for me, with Kaze & The Wild Masks a close second [an amazing DKC clone for those not in the know].

Cotton Reboot is great fun. Don’t think I’ve played anything else on that list!
