Also not a fan of huge acquisitions and exclusivity in the market. This is not a small studio struggling to get by, this is just about limiting customer choice.

    Whole thing stinks.
Yeah that's on head. They've bought them just so they can have the toys. AND they've bought a company which is knowingly knee deep in sexual harassment and terrible conditions. They've leverage a bad situation, closed their eyes to the conditions and bought them. It's a bad look from MS.

For some reason it's only just dawned on me that not only will Call of Duty be Xbox exclusive but it'll be on Game Pass as well....
      No wonder they bought them.

The harrassment thing will be something they'll very publicly iron out to look like they're involvement has cleansed Activision and Blizzard. It'll be radio silence for now because they're 18 months away from owning it so they can't pre-fire anyone. I've read that Activision stands to lose a ton if they get rid of Kotick now so both sides will ride it out and more cheaply jettison him later.

          Holy shiiiiiiiii....

Pretty stunned by this news. This is a big dick playa move and this gen just got very spicy indeed. Can't believe COD will now be an Xbox exclusive franchise. I'm fascinated to see what they do with the franchise - it would be great if they moved away from the annual churn of releases now they don't need it as a balance sheet cash cow in the way that Acti did.

Scorched earth tactics from Phil and co - after getting comprehensively dunked on last gen, MS have come out seriously punching in this one.

This does seem incredibly questionable from a monopoly perspective however. How can this be allowed, really? Fascinating stuff.

If this goes through the antitrust panels, I'm interested to see what happens to Battle-Net: will it continue, or will it merge with Windows Store, or will a new storefront/launcher be born?

Of course Kotick is going to go, but Spencer isn't going to openly broadcast that before the aquisition is finalised, as it might never get finalised.

Could actually be a good shake up from the top down for Actiblizz if it does get the go ahead.

With the ongoing lawsuits and strikes it feels like the perfect time to buy them, their share prices are probably a lot lower than they would be under normal circumstances. The shareholders gets a big payout and all their issues go away, the staff get their policy change as their now a Microsoft owned company (a company with no ongoing staff strikes and "Cosby suite" headlines). All Microsoft have to do is promises to investigate historical issues within the group and their golden.

Yeah this. It's not a bad look for MS, they're not turning a blind eye and being complicit in the current issues with the company... They literally cannot legally intervene and influence it because until this acquisition goes through in 2023 they don't own them.

Phil Spencer has already commented on the sexual harassment in passing but it's not something he can get involved in.

At the very least this seems like the smartest way to sunset Koticks reign without massive complications so if I was an employer of Activision right now I'd be happy with this news.

As for the value of the acquisition. MS doesn't need more FPS especially but it will happily snap up a cash cow F2P title like Warzone which just seems to generate vast sums of revenue despite being pretty average in my book.

I'm sure that will remain on every single platform it currently exists on... much like Minecraft.

As for the annual COD franchise model... You'd assume that will change to be exclusive now, and possibly change it's release frequency as well.

This is a bitter-sweet feeling. I was a big Sega kid in the 90s so seeing PlayStation take a huge set back like this is a stange one! MS don't seem to be building much on merit in terms of game devolopment (outside of Halo and Forza) but by having a smart business model.

I heard MS have bought all of the oxygen in the world and if you don't have a gamepass subscription you will suffocate and die.

Yeah at least it should fix the employee mistreatment.

By the time this finalises in 2023 there will probably be a small back log of games to run through, so we can expect to see some exclusives come 2024. I suspect COD will still be yearly, its come to be expected and makes a tonne every year.

Candy Crush will probably make the money back after 5 years.

Sony is going to need to bring out a couple of FPS now that MS own them all.

My bet, MS buy EA next.

You remember Football manager, were you'd have a crappy team and you try real hard and just claw your way out of the conference league, then get frustrated and just activate infinite money and buy everyone...

Yeah that seems to be what is happening. Why didn't they do these extreme acquisition years ago? It sounds like they're losing patience and now throwing money at it.

                              It's interesting times!!

I'll just leave this here too

In a recent interview, Xbox Executive Phil Spencer claimed console exclusives were counter to what gaming is meant to be about.
