After the disappointment of 3 , I’m not so sure . And 4 years you say , I admire your optimism!

The problem with KH is that if you didnt invest in it from the first game, you need biblical levels of reading to understand what the hell is going on.

Same, whilst I was okay enough with KH3 it wasn't anything special and the plot was utterly spoiled by how convoluted they'd made things by then. KH3 rode finally delivering an ending and left me not really feeling much hunger for KH4. We've obviously seen little of this one so far but what little is there looks like the style has been sucked out of it and I'd need something close to a narrative restart to care

I didn’t play 3 so can’t comment in any way on that one but this one looks like the pitch is “what if it’s Kingdom Hearts but drab?” I feel like the story is all pretty much nonsense anyway. I’ve played a load of these games, read guides to try to fill in the gaps and I have no idea what’s going on. If I don’t know what’s happening, what chance does anyone else have?

3 changed up the visuals in each world - so, in the Toy Story world, the characters looked like jointed toys, whereas in the Tangled world, they had shaders which made them seem more in-fitting with the characters. It established that the characters and style would, to some degree, change depending on the world they inhabit. So if this meant to be "the real world", it doesn't necessarily mean the entire game would look like this.

I enjoyed the ending of KH3 after I spent much of last year playing the whole series, but I totally agree that its terminology is really confusing and needlessly convoluted.

I find the series has become unnecessarily obsessed with its story and characters too. In the aftermath of the 20th event there was chatter about which characters will be back when we all know the real elephant of the room is that people only care about these things because of the Disney franchises and the series would be immeasurably better for cutting the Square elements.

Maybe. Honestly after getting into KH1, my biggest disappointment was that they did very little with the "mix" of the elements.

So there were Squaresoft characters running around, but all the "worlds" were Disney themed and as time went on, there was less and less Squaresoft stuff that wasn't specifically Kingdom Hearts.

I really enjoyed the battle mechanics & summons in 3 plus the worlds were fun to explore however the story is convoluted trash. It's the thing that put me off from jumping in as i knew of the reputation of the series pretty much requiring you to have played them all for it to make sense however i saw the gameplay footage & the battles did look fun, no game should ever require you having to play every game in the series to know what the hell is going on. Properly made games can have a contained story that makes sense while also fitting in with the timeline of the series so if you like it you can play the rest and get a bigger story.

The battle system is another thing I'll be watching. KH3 was fine but after the FF7 remake blew it out of the water KH4 will need to advance things immensely

Bit of a tangent but something I've always loved about Kingdom Hearts is its art and graphic design, from a product design perspective. I love how it has a really broad range of motifs and logos, but there's something about them; you see themand they're instantly recognisable.

They've sold jewellery of the emblems etc. and it's not surprising.
