Ps1 launch, a total shift in gaming that threw the table up and walked out the party winning, and it still makes me chuckle to this day that it was born completely out of Nintendo’s gigantic unnecessary arrogance that may never had happened, thank you Ninty.

Also Mario 64 then upended gaming again with its, well everything, gobsmacked the first time I played it.

An age never to be repeated in entertainment.

In a similar vein, I remember an article in the official PlayStation mag about CELL processor that I think might have been just shortly after the launch of the PS2. I tried to wrap my head around how good the games might look on it and was unable to do so.

Getting my PS1 was a big occasion for me. The first time I spent my own money (and a lot of it!) on a console. I secured the console, an extra controller, Wipeout, Ridge Racer and Battle Arena Toshinden. I had been playing Ridge Racer arcade in Las Vegas arcade in Liverpool, so I was so hyped for that. Especially after all the positive reviews. However, I was even more blown away by Wipeout. Wow. What an occasion! Me walking out of HMV looking like daddy bigbucks!

I think seeing VF on gamesmaster for the first time left me quite gobsmacked , having not seen a 3D game like that before . Also playing waverace on the N64 , the water ( for the time ) looked like water

I was over at a mate's house in 2001 and he put on Phantasy Star Online. I didn't have any experience of online gaming either, so it was a revelation. It really felt like you were in a new future, hanging out in the lobby chatting then beaming down to a planet. The combination of that dreamy music and those visuals, plus we were stoned, which heightened the experience. I remember getting home and bending my girlfriends ear about how I'd just seen the future of gaming.

Another one I remember was when I fired up my 360 for the first time. Going from the ps2 to the 360 was an unbelievable step up. Not so much the launch games (although Oblivion stood out) but the console itself was huge leap. Wireless controller, a HDD and online play. Lost planet online was a wow moment. That was a really special time to be a gamer.

I remember being quite underwhelmed with my 360 when I first booted it up with games like Kameo and Dead Rising.

About a month later I bought a little 24 inch 720p LCD TV with a VGA cable for it and - Boom, looked lovely

It probably seems insane now, but playing the first Grand Theft Auto on my mate's PS1. He phoned me to say he'd got it and I walked over, we started playing in the afternoon and well into the night. It wasn't technically the first open world game, but the city felt so alive and as stupid as it sounds, it really felt like you could do anything. We were obsessed with seeing how much mayhem you could cause, finding secret cars hidden around, doing all the missions. The fact you had one big city to explore was mad, but three was just insane - and they felt huge!

It's really understated just how much of a big deal GTA1 was in this country (probably because it didn't have as much impact in America). Pretty much everyone I knew loved it and I would still go back to it years after release (especially once I'd got the better PC version). I can't think of any other game I know as well as it, I know the maps of the city better than where I actually live.
