N64 classics vs their Gamecube equivalents

I have been think about picking up an N64 recently, and just wondered how you guys felt the classic N64 games measured up against their Gamecube equivalents.

    So far I have

Mario 64 vs Mario Sunshine....I felt Mario 64 was more fun and slightly less frustrating, however I relished the challenge offered by Mario Sunshine, and the graphics were sublime.

Waverace 64 vs Waverace: Bluestorm...Again I felt Waverace 64 was slightly more fun, butonce you learnt the new handling style of Bluestorm, I thought they were actually on a level pegging.

Can you guys think of any more comaprisons, and whats your opinions on the examples I have given?

Well people expected the second coming from SMS, when it clearly wasn't going to be. The watergun was a big clue that it wouldn't play like the others. At least it didn't have flying. Flying Mario does not work in 3D. So I really enjoyed SMS. More than Mario 64? Nyaaarrghhh. It may be my favourite Cube game, but there were some problems - chucking players back to the hub world. Why????? I'll select quit if I get bored! Camera problems, whilst rare, when they occurred:
    Argggghhh.

Mario 64 was better than SMS, if only for the superb first level where you discover that this is what 3D gaming is going to be like. But the freshness helped.
Zelda disappointed. It's like they spent 6 months on the content or something, and the remaining time on the engine. Three islands of note, the rest were pointless and would have taken a day to put in the game (or so it seemed). Too much ****ing water, too little to do. It felt padded out. And like Prime it committed the cardinal sin of using a glorified treasure hunt.
And the fact that it reused quite a lot of ideas from OOT and LTTP.
I could go on for hours, but I won't.

The N64 was the better console/had the most exciting games IMO.
Of course, when Colosseum is released I'll be the ultimate whore again. This better beat Stadium 2, otherwise they'll feel pain!

If you have a Gamecube but didn't own an N64 then what went wrong, oh well you live and you learn, heres some more comparisons for you, along with the scores if you wanted to rate them that way.

      Mario 64 - 10: N64
The best game ever made and one no gamer should be without. If you haven't played it, then i envy you because its experiance is unrivaled.
      >
      Mario Sunshine - 7: GC
Close but no cigar. Fairly standard graphics, gameplay that is the same as SM64 but with worse level design, and much worse stars or shines in this case.

      Zelda TOOT - 10: N64
Once again Miyamoto comes up trumps in this absolute masterpiece. One of the best games ever made and easily the best Zelda by a country mile.
      >
      Zelda TWW - 6: GC
Whoops, Miyamoto did not do it again. Very good graphics but thats about it for this one. Very boring level design, the wind batton was just pants quite frankly, HE COPPIED ICO JUST UNFORGIVABLE, more pushing blocks: Yay. This one is best forgotton.

      Star Fox - 9: N64
What can i say about the legendary Star Fox 64. Amazing graphics, amazing levels, gameplay ballanced to perfection and quitte good lifespan.
      >
      SF: Adventures - 4: GC
What were RARE thinking. Just utter Tripe and to call it a Star Fox is just plain rude.

      Wave Race 64 - 9:
Turned the jet ski genre on its head. Revolutionary water affects, perfectly ballanced gameplay and great level design made this another winner for Nintendo.
      >
WR: Blue Storm - 7: GC
One of the games that faired better when being converted to next gen. More of the same then but with better graphics. Still not as good as its N64 daddy though.

      Mario Party - 8: N64
Mario + Any Board Game + lots of mini games = mario Party. This is great fun and the first installment is still the best of the series.
      >
      Mario Party 5 - 5: GC
the same game. but for ?38.00 more, what a bargain. Just gety the N64 Version for ?2 instead.

      Mario Kart 64 - 8: N64
Not as good as the Legandary Snes version but still a very good game in its own right.
      >
Mario Kart DD - 5: GC
Not very good at all really but still better than most of the other kart clones out there.

      F Zreo x - 8: N64
Not really a fan of futuristic racers anymore but still a very good game still and its the series that started it all of to.
      F Zero Dx - 8: GC
More of the same really but a worthy update none the less.

Can't think of any more at the mo but will add more when and if they come to me. Meanwhile here's some other N64 games that are worth getting. If only for the fact that they were all basicaly revolutionary in ther own rights and there all about ?2 - ?5 to buy now.

      Goldeneye - 10
      Perfect Dark - 10
      Banjo Kazoie - 9
      Jet Force gemani - 9
      Diddy Kong Racing - 9

        Mario - 64 destroys Sunshine

        Starfox - Adventure never happened

Zelda - I hate the series but OOT did it first and better

Wave Race - Blue Storm has a better trick system but the music, course design and handling are better in 64

        F-Zero - I can't go back to X after GX

Mario Kart - Double Dash is crap, especially in 8 player

Smash Brothers - Gamecube version is better in every aspect

        1080 - I don't like the series but I prefer EAD's version

Mario Party - Started off as a nice idea but has been run into the ground. The Made in Wario boys at R&D1 should be given the license as Hudson have run out of ideas

To be honest, EAD and NSTC have sucked this generation.

I have to question a topic that manages to directly compare Starfox 64 and Starfox Adventures...

Yeah, I was wondering that. Firstly the N64 one wasn't that good, and secondly:
WTF? One is like an action adventure from Rare made under rather strained circumstances. The other isn't. Let's wait for Namco's effort first before putting the boot into the Cube. After all, if I didn't have a Cube, I'd never have experienced certain airborne Monkey dogfight action. Or Ikaruga. And the N64 had neither marblemadness games or shoot-em-ups of such high quality.

                They're both great machines.

The GC always fails to out-N64 the N64. 3D Mario, 3D Zelda... the problem is that Nintendo get it perfect the first time, and are left with nowhere else to go.

What I would say is that the GC has a hell of a lot of games which have no equivalent at all on the N64. Viewtiful Joe, SMB, Metroid Prime, Pikmin... there was nothing like these in Nintendo's last gen. IMO Nintendo should stop trying to make SM64.5 - which will inevitably disappoint for being too similar or too different - and focus on new ideas.

It's a shame new ideas and new games don't sell brilliantly any more. You get the impression Nintendo's focus has changed because of market pressures. They're trying to build brands where they should just create a new game. It's a shame so many people want to play as the same character again, most of the time in the same game (just with different textures and music).

They've tried to update things and generate some momentum, and to an extent it has worked, but to a larger extent it hasn't.

Anyway, any news on Mario 128?

You mean walk away from Mario for five or so years? Give the brand a chance to rejuvenate and seem fresh? Good idea. I'd love to come back to a Mario game in ten years time with the same excitement as Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES or whatever it was called.
Sadly, since this is the real world, Nintendo can't afford to ditch their mascot for five to ten years. It's not as if the games with Mario are bad, they're not. They're absolutely brilliant. But I really want to see games such as Pikmin 2 and Stage Debut given a chance to shine. Nintendo is great at generating appealing characters and even better games. They should let themselves show us what they're capable of.

Super Monkey Ball and Metroid Prime are probably the best two games this generation and neither were on the N64!!! (which is of course the last generation).

PS just finished replaying Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - the Scummvm version is better than the original!

Nintendo can remake Mario 64 all they want. Just as long as the next one is in Viewtiful-O-Vision. A 2D platformer is just what this generation needs, especially a brand new Mario one.

Oh what a surprise this thread is.

Back to the old SNES>N64>GC well known formula.

How anyone can prefer the N64 version of Mario Kart to the GC one is beyond me though.

Sorry. I'm not saying the SNES is better than the N64 (in fact, the games that have had the greatest effect on me have been on the N64) I'm just saying I prefer 2D platformers. And besides, it would make a nice change to go after the end of a level rather than some star or somesuch.
