Since when have you been hit by a sword?

Also the raptors would roll around on the floor, spitting blood as they slowly died.
another from turok... you'd shoot them in the stomach and they'd fall over backwards holding their midsection and kinda kicking out and slowly shuffling backwards on the floor. scary.

        (SNK Arcade)

Proper exploding zombies, download it on Mame and you'll see what's what.

The simple thrill of blowing up cops, criminals and hookers with a rocket launcher or peppering their bodies with bullets as they flailed like meat ragdolls in Deathwish III when I was 12 was always a personal favourite.

And people think all that stuff began with GTA III...

Oh, and Barbarian II on the C64 had some great ones.

Being gored to death by a carnivore, leaving a mass of torn flesh on a near-skeletal frame was genuinely shocking at the time.

That reminds me of the original Barbarian (Palace Software) where if you got decapitated, a little goblin-type creature would drag your body away, booting your head off the screen in the process

Oh yes, I had that too, but the sequel had more colourful deaths.

Being grabbed by the big thing in the pit and he just spat some bones out IIRC and having your head bitten off by the odd dinosaur looking fellow.

Turok Evolution - poison arrows. Watch a guard throwing up and then collapsing was always fun to do.

Christ, The Shape is going to have a field day with this one...

In my opinion, the best death animations are when you can stick explosives to the enemy. I think Jedi Knight was the first game I played where you could actually set the rocket launcher to have sticky properties, which allowed you to shoot them in the head with a few second delay before death. The actual animation was fairly standard though, not enough arm wobbling.

Halo is recently one of the nicest for this. Sticking a plasma grenade on an enemy - or even better, a teammate - never gets tiring. The grunts are funny because of the arms wibbling in the air and screams, but the teammate is even funnier because, well, it's your mate...

I remember this game! Did you look out of a window and have a sniper mode where you could mow down old ladies?

Yeah, that's it! The old ladies sometimes fought back when the thugs tried to rob them too.

It had pretty cool music as well, IIRC.
