    Neo Geo CD?

    Hiya Folks!

I'm toying with the idea of getting hold of one of these beauties but I've heard so much about the long loading times involved with some games - is this *really* bad say in comparison to Saturn or PS1?

Also anyone know if the Samurai Showdown & KOF games are much better on Neo CD than the Saturn ports?

And no, I can't be bothered with the expense of AES!

    Cheers!

I think the oldest original version (front loader) was very slow but they doubled the speed on the top loader drives to 2X - I've never played one so can't comment on it really but I've heard people say its not as bad as its made out to be.

The Neo CD has long loading times, it's true. I cannot say how long on particular titles, as I have never owned or played one. The second revision of the CD version - the CDZ - has a larger RAM cache, not a faster drive. However, it is supposed to be very unreliable and prone to dying on you.

Why not go for a SuperGun, to play MVS versions of the software? It's a cheap and relatively easy solution, plus you can also play other arcade PCBs on it, as well.

Have a look at my article (if you haven't already): Neo Geo - The Future is Now

...and if you need to know anything else, just ask.

Cheers guys, I have indeed read Treble's article, very good it is too.
I am mainly after the opinion of CD owners as the majority of games can be had for ?10-20 as opposed to the more expensive MVS & AES solution.

However I was unaware that a supergun machine could play other PCB's............interesting!

As for conversions, I'll let you know the ones I've played, and rate them:

          KoF 95 - Saturn - excellent
          KoF 99 - DC - good
          Samurai Spirits 3 - Saturn - poor
Garou MOTW - DC - excellent

Not many, as you see. Nothing to do with being a Neo fanboy - no matter what the game is, I always want it on the hardware of origin wherever possible.

i had one of these machines and i wish i hadn't sold it. ft:
it was a top loader single speed version.
and i had about 40 games for it.

if you have the oppertunity of picking one up get it!
the only thing bad about them is the loading times.

the games are pretty easy to get a hold of especialy on eBay.
good sellers are yamatoku and koyou7 (he has stuff on just now).

            get one and ENJOY

Cheers beecee I've been looking at one since Treble's article and have the opportunity of buying one or two different machines.

As for the loading times, I assume this varies depending on the game? I would imagine that simple stuff like Windjammers are farily fast with KOF 2000 etc being slower.

                yeh, loading times vary.

from what i remember, Magician lord loads once.
and samurai spirits rpg took and age to load! (cup of tea time)

It would take a while to load, yes, as it was never released on Neo CD

That's another point: 99/2000 was pretty much the cut-off point for games coming out on Neo CD. If you are looking to get anything after that, you'd be stumped. A lot of high-profile releases are missing from it (Metal Slug X/3/4, Blazing Star, Garou, KoF 2000/01/02, Rage of the Dragons etc.), some of which you could get for your other platforms, but some you can't.

If you want a machine that'll play all Neo Geo releases, and don't want to settle for conversions, MVS or AES would be right for you. Then New Power Instinct Matrimelee and Rage of the Dragons, amongst others, can be yours.

                      Gah, you got me!

I've pretty much decided on the CD route as the Neo Geo thing as a whole is more of a curio item for me than a dedicated investment. Plus the fact the missus would have a blue fit if I started paying ?50 plus for MVS/AES carts, I'm seriously pushing it as it is with a CD machine considering I only just got hold of another Saturn with a load of games!

Anyone have any game reccommendations for the Neo CD?

I've only really played Metal Slug, Metal Slug X and Magical Drop on PC emu plus KOF Evolution on DC.

                          you can 'cheat'.

i play original neo geo cd games through an emulator on my pc - it cuts out the dreaded loading times altogether, and with neo cd you get the bonus of having the arrange soundtracks which are infinetely better than the cart music.

check out www.neogeocd.com it has a section on load times and which games are good and which games are bad. trust me, if you plan to play some of the later King Of Fighters and some of the later games like Real Bout Fatal Fury Special and The Last Blade you will 'feel the pain' - you could make a cup of tea before the match loads up.

the later SNK games i have the ports of (Dreamcast and Saturn + RAM cart ports are mostly excellent, DC ports have no loads whatsoever)

I like the Neo Geo CD, granted the loading times are slow but allows you to have a nice sip of something whilst you wait for fighter x to load in...

Some games load in one go so you never have to wait for anything Puzzle Bobble, Super Sidekicks and League Bowling are games that do so.

However some games can be more expensive then their AES counterparts, Fatal Fury and World Heroes are two examples where they can be twice as expensive.... :/

Worth getting as there are some really nice games but King Of The Fighters '99 is the last game released on Neo Geo CD, the MVS is the next cheapest route and you can get more or less every Neo Geo game released (except the few Neo Geo CD games... which there aren't that many... 3 proper ones if I remember...)

Wouldn't recommend Yamatoku as he sold me a League Bowling with a water damaged manual with all the pages stuck together. :/ Offered a refund if I sent it back but taking the postage into account it would be less then half the value of the CD. :/

My NeoGeo CD collection and loading times:-

Metal Slug 1 - Not too bad, each level loadsin in one go

Metal Slug 2 - Levels typically load in three parts ie you play the first 3rd of the level, then the next 3rd loads in. Pretty annoying and intrusive

Viewpoint - Whole game loads into Ram in one go

Neo Drift Out - Think whole lot loads up in one go

                              Pulstar - not bad

Samurai Shodown & World Heroes 2 - loading times worse than equivalent games on PS1 & Saturn

KOF99 - Absolute AGE in between each ROUND ! not fight (eg one fight is 2 or 3 rounds) but each ROUND ! aaarrrggghhh!!

Puzzle Bobble - loads up in one go

Admittedly this is not a huge collection, but then I only really go it for Metal Slug 1 and Viewpoint....

If I could do it again I'd probably go down the Supergun route
