Are things picking up or is it just me?

Last year (and perhaps the year before that) I was in that gaming slump that quite a few people seemed to be going through (especially Edge). However I've just this week finished POP and BG&E and have enjoyed both quite alot (POP more so). Well as I don't usually finish games I went through the Big 3 (XB Q PS2) and worked out which titles had been completed, or as near as dammit. I've played most of them quite a bit to be honest. And this made me realise that the games so far haven't been too bad. I think it's a bit like your first kick (choose your thing), you never quite get that excitable rush but it is possible to get completely engrossed. Games like Viewtiful Joe, Wind Waker, Metroid (both of them), Mario Kart (two player championship is great after a while), Colin McRae 4, Project Gotham 2, Ico, Mario Party, the list goes on. And although some of those are quite old I find myself with lots of games and little time so I often get round to playing them when the quieter release schedules arise. So although I'm waffling, and making no point that nobody here doesn't already know, I think it's nice that I'm enjoying games again. Hopefully I'm not alone...

You're not alone my friend, I think things have picked up a lot over the last year or so personally, we are spoilt!

2002 was a superb year. The best year for the next-gens so far. 2003 just blatantly sucked since all the decent titles got delayed. However I don't think 2004 will disappoint, what with Fable, BC, Full Spectrum Warrior, the Movies and Advent Rising and a whole host of other titles.

Can't get excited about Nintendo as they're just too secretive. Plus I still remember the flyer in 2002 for games due out in 2003. Oh look FF:CC just came out.

Not to mention Nintendo had a pretty poor year, compared to the high of 2002 (yes, there were bugger all games, but they were damn good). There isn't a single announced GC game coming out that has me excited. Not even Colosseum, as it sounds like Genius Sorority messed it up.

As for Sony, although I hated MGS2, I'm looking forward to MGS3. And GTA:San Andreas, once I find out what music is in it. Because, who plays it for the missions? No one, everyone plays it for the sandbox world where YOU make the missions (I'm sure some will disagree). Hopefully Rockstar North will realise this.

Umm, that's about it, I suppose. The PSP and DS I can't get excited over, because no games have been announced for either, and after the PSX fiasco, I don't trust a single word Sony says.

I guess it's finally happened. I'm an Xbox and PC fanboy now. Heh.

Yes must say my XBox collection is steadily rising. It's like someone here said the other day, the titles that are multi-format run better and load faster on the XBox. Poor old Cube ... and just yesterday I received my second Wavebird so that myself and the nipper can get those last two Golds on Mario Kart. Would be nice if Nintendo had some more multiplayer goodness though. But GTA does sound good. But which city and which time zone? Would a future setting work? Personally I want to see a departure from Renderware and have a decent engine running the franchise - high res, better framerate.

Was going to say more but belly starting to make odd rumbles. Doesn't happen very often 'cause I'm a gutsy b***ard

iloveannie - Like Michael Jackson, you are not alone. I put together an article on this same subject not a month ago. Seems to me the period starting around October last year to present has been unusually blessed. Granted, slightly better in the US and if you own an Xbox (PoP and BG&E) but I don't make the rules. Or something.

I just hope it keeps up, because I'm having a lot of fun that was absent just six or seven months ago.

Right. Maybe it's some star constellation in the shape of a joypad from a long gone system that leads people back to enjoy their gaming again at the moment. That's how I'm feeling right now.

I basically quit PC games and am so happy sitting in front of my TV playing console titles that I've never dedicated sufficent time to in the past. I'm having a sweet phase of console love; it's a rush. Am even completing stuff, it's amazing.

As a writer you could have gone a bit Mr Biffo at this point. Thankfully you didn't
