ive been messing around a bit with this game for the past couple of days, but i still cant get the hang of driving it properly. whats the secret? i can kinda get to the point where i can get my car facing the right way on exit instead of constantly over steering and facing a barrier, but i still almost always end up sliding sideways into the other barrier. do you have to take corners quite slowly, or am i not hand braking early enough? any drifting fans here prepared to lend a hand?

Well, the game is reasonably realistic, so you cannot just fly into bends at 200km/h Initial D-style
It also depends on what type of car you're using, since there's a significant difference in handling styles between FF/MR/FR/4WD. Oh, and let's not forget the weather conditions and tyre choice...
Front wheel drive (FF) cars are very easy to drive, but require a lot of handbrake use to make them "drift". Generally-speaking, you can enter a corner at a higher speed since the handbrake is going to wash away most of your momentum mid-bend. FF cars are poor for hillclimbs though.
The FR/MR cars are more tricky, especially if they have a lot of power. A "slow in-fast out" approach is usually best. Once you've initiated a drift, you can control the "pendulum effect" of the rear end with the throttle and steering inputs.
Personally, I prefer to use 4WD cars since they're more forgiving. I modify the suspension settings so they behave in a more tail-happy RWD fashion though
