    Opening & running AVI files

Not sure if im allowed to ask this here,or if its in the wrong place so apologies in advance.

I have some quicktime movies with avi after thier name but when i come to open them one doesnt play and the other i can hear(its glitchy) but cannot see.
Am i missing a piece of software? Ive watched quicktime movies before though. By the way i have a MAC.
    Thanks

I was going to say it's a Codec problem but don't know if the same applies to Mac's ?, why not get a decent PC ? (ducks)

VLC plays anything regardless of codec (according to a mac owning friend of mine).

        Might be worth a try.

I use VLC on my Mac and it's great... Quicktime is generally awful but VLC just opens whatever you want.

And there's also Linux and Windows versions too.

I have managed to view the files now (on the mac) using VLC but any ideas how i put them on to a disc so i can watch them on a TV.
Do i need to do something to them first,ie put VLC and the file on the same disc.
Im a bit mug at this sort of thing. Got all the stars on Mario 64 though.

Also, an interesting thing with VLC is that it also plays video DVDs from *any* region, without restrictions. I love it.

If you're wanting to play thru Quicktime again you can go to www.3ivx.com and get their mpeg4 codec. VLC is great tho ^_^

I downloaded it earlier and it is quite a weird one to install.
What do you now have in your dock? A system folder or the 'traffic cone icon'.
I had to place the VLC system folder on the HD and then go in to it to remove the icon to place in the dock. It wouldnt let me pull it from the vlc-0.7.2 white 'drive' icon.
                          You are on a MAC?

That's weird... I upgraded to VLC 0.7.2 2 days ago on my Mac (OS X 10.3.3), and everything worked perfectly fine (drag & drop to /Applications).
