    Voice Chat Programs

Well, a group of friends and I like to play stuff online, especially Desert Combat. We have tried a number of chat programs, but none seem to fit the bill. I was just wondering if you lovely people out there could suggest any free ones. We have tried these so far:

Roger Wilko. It works, it is easy to set up and it doesn't affect our ping much. On the other hand, the voice quality is really, really poor.

Microsoft Game Voice. Again, it works, is easy to set up, it doesn't affect our ping and the voice quality is good. However, unless someone buys the Voice Commander headset, we can only have four people on, and there are five of us.

Ventrilo. It works, and the voice quality is good. A little tricky to set up, but nothing we can't handle. However, whoever runs the server takes a massive hit to their ping (frm around 20 to around 120). This happens even when we turn the quality of the server right down.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've heard about Teamspeak, but it seems a right pain to set up, and the person who runs the server may have the same hit to the ping as Ventrilo.

Just have a deidicated server for voice?

I used to play Call of Duty like that. But gave up after a few weeks
when I realised no one could hear me.

We can't have a dedicated server for voice, as it sucks the bandwidth of whoever is hosting. We don't really want a seperate PC just to host. I'll try this Skype, but is it suited to talking in groups, as it looks like a phone application rather than a dedicated voice chat one.

I use Ventrillo as it has Linux server stuff, which is darn handy and its also hideously easy to get going on client machines which is usually the biggest hurdle.

Tried Teamspeak between two people. The quality was good, and it didn't affect the ping. I'll report back when I have tried more people at the same time.
