FTP'ing to my Xbox What Specific Network card&cable?

    Hi,
I would like to attempt to transfer files from my pc over to my Xbox(FTP).Problem is I have absolutely no pc knowledge at all,I can basically just about get onto the net and thats the extent of my pc abilities.
I understand that I need a network card and a CAT5 crossover cable. Now I've looked in a few old pc mags and the recent Maplin catelogue and there seems to be several types of network card avalible(RJ45 PCI,Cardbus,UTP/STP and USB) which is confusing me as I'am uncertain which type I need,I don't want to end up with the wrong one.
Which type do I need?Any direct links to the specific card would be so appreciated.
The only CAT related cable I have come across(in an old pc mag) is one made by Belkin, but its called a RJ45 Cat 5e patch cable.I'am guessing this is the wrong cable as its refered to as a patch cable and not a crossover cable plus it is not a Cat 5 but a Cat 5e.Again any direct links to the specific cable I need would be so welcome.
Thanks for your time and sorry to be so long winded.
    Cheers famitsu1

The network card you want is just a standard PCI Network card like the last one on this page: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...ional_115.html

The cable you want is a RJ-45 crossover cable. These are different from a patch cable as one of the wires crosses over in the middle: http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Produ...rase=crossover

      Network cards

I wouldn't stress too much about which network card. I knew nothing about networking a couple of weeks ago and I just bought the cheapest (PCI) one possible at PC World (?9.99) and it gave easy instructions for slotting it into your computer. It works fine. The crossover cable was easy to get too - I think I got that at Curry's for about ?7.99 - the official XBox one was about ?20, obviously.

The biggest problem was convincing my PC, running Windows ME (bad mistake) to FTP with the XBox. Basically, if you're running XP you're laughing. It'll set up your Local Area Network link for you and then you've just got make sure you've set up your IP addresses properly. Which, come to think about, I had to ask about 5 people's help to deal with! Good luck with it.

        Hi,
thanks so much for the info and advice fellas, never figured finding the cable would be as easy as walking into Curry's.
Ermmm my operating system is actually ME too,god what have I let myself in for.Don't surpose you have any useful related links to FTP'ing with Window's ME,never heard of ME being a problem when transfering data over to the Xbox.
        Thx again famitsu1

Dave's problems are sumed up in this thread: http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread...ewpost&t=24020

EDIT: just read the thread, looks like David had to download Knoppix (a linux operating system). This is an option if you have broadband, or you could ask someone to download it and send it to you.

I'm also using ME, I've yet to successfully FTP to my Xbox. I've tried almost every method I've discovered.

"Dave's problems are sumed up in this thread:..."

If only my problems could be so easily summed up... but yes, it was a long and painful journey. Knoppix is certainly the one to go for if ME fails - you'll have no problems at all with that.

              Best

                    Hi,
thx so much for the continuing help and info.Hear that, thats the sound of the **** hitting the fan even harder,to add to my troubles I only have a dial up connection, how many Mb is Knoppix?Could you provide a direct link to the download?
Whilst swotting up on Xbox related matters I heard that a downloadable program called Qwix for the Xbox can be used instead of FlashFXP,would this get around the ME problem?I also seem to recall a program used in FTP'ing to the Xbox called Cromwell(linux based I think like Knoppix)would this possibly get around the problem?
I've also read that its possible to transfer data over simply by using a cross over cable and windows internet explorer program.
                    Ta famitsu1

There's no problem FTP'ing with Windows Me. My laptop has Me installed and FlashFXP and I FTP all the time to the XBox with no problems - either directly via crossover or through the network switch.

Just download FlashFXP first and try it. You can FTP to the XBox through Internet Explorer but it's not much fun, very finicky and, more importantly, very slow.

Or better still, before you download any big programs for FTP, you can use Windows' own FTP program just to test the waters. Go to Start/Run and type ftp
it's purely text-based, but at least you'll know if you can connect to the XBox or not beforehand....

and for paveynick, http://www.cuteftp.com/cuteftpmac/ for Mac should do the trick. I've never used CuteFTP but I've always heard good things.

One more thing, bear in mind that in order to successfully set up an FTP connection with your XBox, it's wise to know a bit beforehand, saving trouble later on. I get asked about FTP all the time from people, and I can tell from their faces when I mention things like IP, Subnet, etc that maybe it's not such a good idea?

However, if you're prepared to learn, then let nothing stop you, and my advice is as soon as you manaage to connect to your XBox, backup the C drive at least (and E drive which holds your saves). When I started out, I wiped mine and was stuck for a few days...

OK, I'm a complete beginner at all this stuff but I want to start FTPing stuff over to my modded Xbox as I want to update my BIOS.

I'm not sure if my computer already has a network card though - under network connections in the Control Panel, beneath Dialup I've got LAN or High Speed Internet with a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter. Is this the right thing? If not, will the D-Link DUB-E100 USB-Ethernet Adaptor (NW-030-DL) on the webpage linked on the first page work - it's a USB device rather than a card which sounds far easier than installing new hardware.

I've got some step by step instructions on how to FTP after all this but before I go out and buy cables etc, I wanted to make sure I'm okay to get started. Ta.
