Saturn Astro City Stick HSS-0136 modification

Just got one of these lovelies but I'm wondering whether the stick can be swapped out for a DC one. The reason I want a DC one is because the switches used are standard ones which I can swap for my zippys and cherries, whereas the Saturn stick uses switches with the long metal strip covering the contact.

It can be done, I bought one of these and was shocked at how naff the stick was. So I passed it on to a friend who replaced the stick for a Sanwa one for me. However according to him it was a right pain to do as the inside housing was somehow welded to the roof of the unit. He ended up drilling the roof and now I've got 4 lovely screws sticking out the top. Because of this the stick sit a tad higher than usual but still plays great. Fair play though he did a great job and it works lovely now. Best thing to do is get rid of the default stick sharpish, I'm shocked how Sega let that one get through quality testing.

having said that, the stick feels the same as the DC one - well, it feels the same as the DC stick at our warehouse which are pretty old and a bit too clicky
i'll look into this, although it's fine for now. maybe when hyper sf2 comes out on the xbox i'll get worried into performing at my best but for now i like it.
mine has been modded for xbox use, btw.

Yeah it's quite handy for the xbox, got mine running through a Magic Box (although the response can be a bit laggy sometimes) I got it primarily for Saturn shooters as I'm not that accustomed to pads for shooters. It's the closest I'm gonna get to having an Astro City cab in my house anyways

yeah i don't deal with converters for that reason.
although it is a bit messy to wire up separate pads, i bought the stick from pete (mmmonkey.co.uk) and he'd used the great gamester arcade stick pcb (the pcb, not the stick!) which is only 5x6cm and fits snugly inside the casing of the astro. he kindly sent me the saturn cable too (he'd performed a full mod, and added a button for back too) so i'll wire that up once i figure out how to switch between xbox and saturn (the saturn circuitry is still inside as it's a hassle to remove, and unnecessary too

the saturn astro stick or just a sanwa replacement bit?

i've had a look inside mine, and i've managed to replace the switches with bloody marvellous cherry's but i ran out of solder so can't wire them up yet.

i had to widen the shaft a bit so that they'd click early and this has reduced the overall travel by a little bit, but now the stick clicks as soon as you push it so it should be very responsive.

as for where to buy, ask saurian he does them (and he mods them for other consoles, i believe).

personally, i'd rather just sell mine and buy a DC stick as i don't need 8 buttons, and i could swap the stick easily too. but the saturn sticks buttons are so much nicer than the DC ones (bit higher, and they feel more tactile)
