Can a Crystal Xbox be modded to NTSC without chipping?

Is this possible at all? I've had a look on the xbox-scene forums, but their search
function is borked atm, and the stuff I could find is waaaaay over my head. Basically I just want a new box to replace my launch US model, and only need to enable the mod once in order to change it to US NTSC mode. If someone could explain the easiest method of doing this, what files / hardware I'd need etc, that'd be sweet!

I think you can enable it but without BIOS write enabled, you'd have to do it everytime you wanted NTSC. I think >_<

If you use a program like the Enigma Video Mode Selector, you can set it to either PAL or NTSC - it changes an EEPROM setting, so no - you don't have to do it every time.

But to do these things it would need to be modded, so no you cant do it.

There are ways of running unsigned code without a mod-chip but I dont think you can do it with Crystal Xbox's yet.

Why don't you want to get it modded?

get yourself a copy of agent under fire and pick up a memory card.

download the 007 save, sign your enigmah ntsc/pal select program and stick it all on the mem card. run 007, load the mem card save, and voila - enigmah videomode select without a chip! i've done it myself and it works fine. hide the game and mem card somewhere safe and use them again if you ever want to switch back to pal.

as for the crystal xbox issue, it's only a problem if you want to softmod (i.e. permanently modify through software) the machine. using 007 is fine (although i haven't personally tested it) for your purpose.

one problem, if you change it to NTSC you can't play any games that have no PAL 60 option, all you will get is a black screen

Rumour has it that MS will enable Hi-def on UK consoles soon. Although I'll believe it when I see it.

although most of the games aren't pal50 only, and most of the seemingly pal50-only work fine in ntsc. so far the only game i've tried that gave black screens was agent under fire and only for the movie bits

but then you're wanting to switch to NTSC to play US games right?

just realised you'll need to change the region of your console which is a bit tricky (and scary) as it involves editing the xbox's "eeprom" (which in turn involves unlocking the hard drive, changing the region from 4 to 1, then relocking the hard drive - if you mess it up you'll need a modchip to get back on track)
