    P D A ???

Is this the right forum? I don't know....move if its all a bit wrong. Cheers.

WHo here has a PDA and what do you use them for? I am thinking of one for no particular reason and was wondering if they can actually be used for anything at all....Can they?

Depends how much you want to spend and what do you want it to do ?

Mobiles can do alot of things PDA'a do nowadays (calendar/diary/notepad/games etc) so prehpaps they are not as popular as they were ?

Nothing like an impulse buy though is there.

My colleague keeps a set of small downloads and patches that we use for our software on his, plus instructions on how and where to use them. No idea how he gets them onto users' systems without the PDA's software installed on their machines, though. I'll have to ask him (although I do know he also has a 256meg USB memory card, which I guess he might use in some sort of combination using the PDA's firewire port). On top of that, he uses it for SatNav in his car, now

I have a HP Ipaq 4150, useful gadget really. My main use is for my mileage(expenses), it makes doing the expenses at the end of the month so much quicker (actually my old Casio Cassiopeia did the same but was nearing the end of its usefulness due to ****e battery). As for gadgets the wireless networking and bluetooth are handy. A few peeps a works have got the same PDA with Tom Tom Navigator and a GPS unit for Sat Nav.

do nopt get one unless you had a reason, i got one a few months back with the intention for using it for all sorts, ended up using it for 2 hours and then just letting it sit in the corner untill a few weeks back when i traded it for a japanese saturn

I like the calendar software for the desktop and stuff that comes with it. I therefore use the actual pda as a sync between my laptop and desktop (no IR on the laptop). The pda gets used rarely. I've never used a calendar on a phone either and aren't likely to unless I get a new phone that syncs with everything else.

Best use for a PDA I can think of is to install road map software on it, recently I had to travel a long distance by car with a friend and he had this, it audibly and visually explained the route to take from postcode to postcode, very precise it was also.

                  I have a Palm Zire 71 and I use it for lots of things. Including using it as an address/phone book and calender. The built in camera means I can take (low quality, non flash assisted) pictures were I normally couldn't take a camera (as most people won't question you whipping out a PDA). And the most important thing is that I have a program called Smartlist on my PDA and that holds the databases of every game I own (as well as full lists for the Super Famicom, Master System/Mark III, PC Engine, Megadrive, Super 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast and Mega CD) so games shopping is less painful. ^_^;

I own a Palm Tungsten E, basically use it to play mp3's, watching movies on (buy a big sd card) and also use it as a pix viewer. Oh and for keeping work lists and stuff.

I can also prep for meetings on a train with just my pda rather than going through loadsa pages of paper. Plus you can sync with outlook and its ms office compatible.

I'm now on my second Microsoft powered Pocket PC. Gets used daily.

Mainly use it for remote email, terminal services (so I can log on and view the servers at work and home from anywhere), mp3/digital music player, contacts database and of course.... emulation :-)

Comes into it's own most of the time, if you use the right compression, you can get two movies on a 256Mb storage card. Also comes in handy as my sense of direction (or should that be lack of) is useless and TomTom navigator is good for plotting routes and satnav.

They can be picked up quite cheaply too, my first one, a Viewsonic v35 onl;y cost me ?140 + VAT when I picked it up on a special offer 6 months ago.
Quite well specced too it had a 300Mhz Intel X-Scale processor, 64Mb storage built in but only an SD Card slot, no Compactflash slot.

Now I've got a Fujitsu Loox 610 with a 400Mhz Intel X Scale CPU, Bluetooth, compact flash slot , sd card slot running Windows Mobile 2003. Be lost without it (but then again I am quite blonde).

Im really tempted with buying one simply for the Sat nav aspect.

There a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a system for the car and can be used for other stuff.

                        Anybody reccomend any online retailers?

                            Thanks for the advice guys.
I got a palm pda (clie th55) which I find quite useful. Thoough it needs heavy tweaking but I like it.
Cos I am in Japan, it came installed with a useful dictionary and also has mp3 + movie playback. Which is useful. I am gonna use it for more things when I work it out but the machine is nifty!

Yup Clies are the best but Sony have discontued them outside of Japan. I've got a UX-50 and its the nuts, has wi-fi and bluetooth so I can download my email and browse the web from the thing very useful.
