I'm currently living in Japan (as part of a year abroad studying here). As I've only got a couple of months left, I'm starting to look at ways of sending stuff back. Since I'll only have a 20kg baggage allowance and I really don't want to lug around a lot of stuff. The main issue is that I have either the option of posting or carrying home my PC with me (it's a compact cube design and only weighs 5kg).
Obviously it'll cost a bit, but it'll save quite a lot of hassle, and I can make sure it's packaged securely. However if I'm posting a computer from myself to myself do I have to pay any tax? I mean will the goverment attempt to nick 17.5% of the value of it from me. I think living abroad entitles you to exemption on most things but I'm not sure.
