Devil May Cry - difficulty levels

Howdo - just picked up Devil May Cry off my shelf for something to do, and caned through on easyauto mode (I know, I know). Now, I want to play on Normal mode next, and I understand once I finish this it will open up Hard, then Dante Must Die mode.

But what I need to know is, do I start a NEW game and select normal, or just load my cleared data game? Cos all those powerups I collected and never used would surely come in handy...

I feel daft just asking... Help me!

Load up the completed save file, which will carry over items (apart from auto-easy mode)
Loading up a new one would mean you have to start from scratch .
