Playing Region locked US MD games on a PAL MD unit?

I know the usual method is to mod the machine, but is there a converter of sorts that will acheive the same result? It's for a friend who doesn't want to mod his machine. Any info would be truly appreciated

There is, it's called various things (including Megakey) but it's a pass through cartridge with 3 dip switches at the back which allow you to fool the machine to play other regions. Sadly it's quite tricky to hunt one down and Ebay is your best bet, it's still cheaper to buy a Megadrive one and convert it to a multiregion machine tho.... You can also use an action replay cartridge too but it can be a bit more fiddly.

I've got a nitro adapter 2, which is the same sort of thing as a mega key.

I think it will be cheaper to but a US MD or one of those Genesis 3's from the US.
