    Which chip?-PS2

    Hi,
thinking about getting around to chipping my Jap PS2 soon(the new HDD loader as alot to do with this)but have absolutely no knowledge at all on the subject.Basically I'am after the most reliable chip going but there seem to be a few of them out there which confuses a person like me so some recommendations would be really welcome.Always been put off from chipping the console due to stories I've heard about the unreliabilty of the 1st lot of chips to enter the market around the early days of the PS2,is this still a concern.
    Any info great welcome.
    Cheers famitsu1

You could try the 'Matrix MXL2' chip.

    - plays all imports (thats a given) direct boot.
    - removes green screen tint when viewing DVD's using RGB
    - works on all PS2 versions, so i've heard.

    And probably some other stuff.
Will2003/ Saurian should sort you out on all the details if they pop theirs heads round the Q&A folder.

The MXL2 won't work on a Japanese PS2 (at least, the PAL MXL2 chip won't work - you'd need to get hold of an NTSC one) - so that would leave you with the Messiah 2, Matrix Infinity, or the DMS3.

I don't really like the Messiah 2s any more, so that leaves the Infinity or the DM3. I've only fitted a couple of Infinity chips, but they seem decent.

I'm assuming you're going to get Will to do it for you anyway, in which case just ask him which he prefers.

        Hi Guys,

Like Yoda says, the PAL MXL2 won't support the JPN PS2 you want to mod. Do you know what version PS2 yours is? I went through a big anti-Messiah period, but now the final 2.0 code is around, with a reduced wire count and so far none of the QC problems of the old ones, it's not at all bad - it's a little cheaper than the DMS or Infinity which as Yoda says are the only other two choices at the moment for a JPN machine. The different boot modes are a little trickier to select than on the MXL2, but unless you're really, really not that bright you'd get on fine with the new Messiah 2 in a JPN machine.

I still don't use the new Messiah 2 on USA or PAL systems as I just prefer installing the MXL2.

        Hope that helps!

Oh, and @ Yoda - unfortuantely the NTSC MXL2 is only for USA machines, not JPN ones, dammit

That's not the chip doing that. It's just a standard modification you can do without even owning a chip.

Ahh, I didn't know that - thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for the heads-up about the Messiah 2 v2 - that one passed me by as well!

It is the chip doing that - it means you don't have to bother with the other modification at all.

I'm not even sure if that modification works on ALL PS2 motherboard versions.

On a vaguely related note (i.e. slight thread hijack) anyone know where I can find the messiah modchip "sourcecode" as supposedly available from hkmods ? Just fancy a geek read over lunch.

Their forum logon thing seems screwed up at the moment.

                thanks

                  Hi,
thanks everyone for the support and info, its hugely welcome and appreciated.
Right,Will I currenly own the Jap re-release of the Sakura PS2 console. To be totally upfront I used to own the original Jap release PS2 console which had been modded with an ealier version of the Messaih chip and it was nothing but an absolute nightmare to play and own and totally put me off of PS2 chipping until now.
I've been and perused your site last night and given a month to get the cash together would love to plump for one of your Pal ltd edition silver PS2 consoles modded with the MXL2 chips,do you still have these to hand?
                  Cheers everyone.
