slow laptop need advice........

My Neighbor gave me a laptop, The problem is that its old and to slow. What can I do to speed thinhs up on it? she told me it's a MMX? and has a 3GB hard-drive (half full)You hit the on button and it takes forever to startup, I've already deleated things from the internet options and all that, right now I'm defragging and while its not restarting its so very slow.

Whys it so slow and how can I speed things up?

you know, it could just be a slow machine mmx kind suggests its around the time when the instruction set made it into pentium machines... around 200mhz (if that...)??
