PS2 HDD and network adapter

Friend looking for info about both here...

Firstly, where to get them from. HDD I couldn't help with, but Play have the network adapter for ?18. Would one from here work with a Japanese PS2 (which he has)?

Secondly, any version problems with either device? He has a version 1 Japanese PS2 and I recall at least one person ranting recently that he couldn't use something on his PS2 because his version wasn't new enough to use it.

I'm probably quite wrong about this (I usually am), but am I right in thinking the first three PS2 variants have a different expansion port and therefore will be incompatible with the network adaptor. (I believe these to be SCPH 10000, SCPH 15000 and SCPH 18000).

A quick look on Google throws up this page, mainly about HDLoader but suggests these model PS2s may have the different expansion ports I'm thinking of:

Having never owned one of the first 3 JAP variants I cannot account for this personally, so take everything I say with a pinch of salt

True, the model1 jap ps2s have a different port, and neither the hdd or network adapters will fit.
(I believe you can buy a hdd adapter in Japan for it...)
