    PS2 - Componant or RGB?

    Hey folks.

Just bought an Asian PS2. Will this do componant, or more importantly, progressive scan? Or should I stick with a RGB lead. Reason being there's a componant lead (3rd party) on Play Asia for only ?3.

    Cheers

It will do yeah, but I think only a couple of game actually support Progressive Scan as of yet!

Wouldnt go for that PS2 component lead though, its most likely muck!

I think all PS2's have the component option in the settings, but not many games do progressive scan (24 according to http://www.hdtvarcade.com/ps2list.htm).
Component (non-progressive) looks pretty much the same as RGB, so it really comes down to what else you're plugging in to the TV and whether you want to share the TV's component input.

        Thanks dude for that.

Well, if I wanted to use componant, it would mean switching some leads over. Unless I can find a decent componant switching box. I think there was some links in the Movie section. I'll check those out.

They tend to be rather expensive and, unless you've got a US/Jap GC or progressive scan DVD player as well, I'd suggest you get yourself a RGB scart switcher and use that for your PS2 along with whatever RGB equipment you've got.

There's a good Joytech one you can get from play.com that accepts 4 inputs and is remote controlled.

            Is that 4 RGB inputs?

You see, my DVD player does Progresive Scan. So does the Xbox, and the GC. So i'm going to have to do some switching anyhoo.

Though, I might just stick with the Xbox on RGB for now anyway, untill I get Yod@ to do the mod. I can't leave my xbox for a few days. Infact, I might buy a replacement just for those 2 days....

              Yes, that's 4 RGB inputs.

Have a look at the price 3-1 and 4-1 component switchers and see if it's worth getting for the PS2.

And - honestly - a bog standard AV switchbox will sort you for progressive inputs. I'm running one now, although it only takes 3 inputs, so I still have to switch my audio inputs about.

Bonus. All I need now is to find a decent, cheapish componant switch box.

                      Cheers fellas.

Why not buy both leads... as dependent on your TV you may find that RGB looks better then Component (does depend on TV, some TVs have better RGB handling then others and some have excellent component decoding then RGB handling...).

Component in non progressive (basically interlaced...) is slightly worse then RGB as the signal still needs to be converted to an RGB signal to be displayed.

However having both means the tens of games that support Progressive Scan (nicer word then Non Interlaced...) then you will get a nice hi res display with the component lead.

                            Kerching.

I don't actually think there's many games that do progressive scan on the PS2, is there? But, I think I might take that off your hands anyhoo!

I've got Componant Leads for Xbox and GC as the majority of those games will be in Progressive Scan. But i've also got an RGB lead for the Xbox for now, just incase.

The ones that I have and spring to mind are Soul Calibur 2 (JPN), Burnout 2 (US), True Crime (UK) and Tekken 4 (UK). Just running interlace through the components will give you a slight quality increase over RGB Scart. PM me if you are interested...
