    XP networking question

Is it possible to re-install TCP/IP in XP Pro? It seems you can add and remove other protocols at will, but TCP seems to be cemented in.

There doesn't seem any way to do this, maybe try reapplying service pack 1 as it refreshs system components.

    Whats happened to it anyway?

We've had a few PC's that just stop picking up DHCP off certain harddrives. Networking bod suggested the TCP/IP stack was b0rked. Re-imaging the whole PC fixes it, but a re-install of TCP should do it quicker, I'd have thought.

      Thanks anyway!

EDIT, I wonder if it's possible in safe mode...

chad. I had a similar problem with the TCIP/IP stack in Win XP. when I booted, I had to assign a manual IP/subnet/Gateway then click ok, then change it all back to DHCP then ok again. Otherwise it just wouldnt pick up an IP on bootup from the router. I tried loads of things to fix it but nothing seemed to work. Let me know if you find a fix, in case it ever happens to me again.

          netsh int ip reset c:\reset_log.txt

That will reset everything TCP/IP related in WinXP

Useful, but sadly it didn't work.

              Bah!

Sorry it didn't do the trick... It usually works when there's issues with TCP/IP

Are you getting an IP at all? Is it in the correct range or does it start with 169?

Have you got anything internet connection sharing related turned on? Or another router or PC that might be trying to hand out IP addresses?

Are all the PCs with the same prob connected to the same switch?

Yeah, the only IP they get is the 169 reserved address rubbish.

No connection sharing going on, the PC's are all in individual wall-ports.

There's no problems with the NIC's or cables though, as swapping out the hard drive or re-installing the O/S sorts it out immediately. Problem must lie in Windoze somewhere, which is why I thought re-installing TCP would sort it, but that doesn't seem possible on XP for some reason.

                  Most odd.

I'm not *too* sure about this but starting XP in safe mode without networking might let you do it.

It's odd that the issue's happening so often (at least I get that impression)

What are you running DHCP on?

Do they need to have a DHCP lease? give em a static

Or if you can delete the reservation on the DHCP server

Already tried the safe mode thing, no joy.

I was talking to the network guru on main campus and he couldn't see anything wrong with the DHCP allocation for the machines in question. Usually when a machine has a virus or something it is blocked on the firewall, but nothing of the sort had happened (although even then they'd still pick up an address).

The frustrating thing is that we can't even begin to fix the problem until we find out what the cause is.
