Question about locking XBox HD

I've learned to FTP to my Xbox (after getting one with a 80gb HD a few weeks ago) and have one question.

Apparently I had to unlock the HD to send stuff across which I did, yet I locked it again just now and easily sent stuff across. Apparently unlocking may get you banned from Xbox Live too...

I was told you had to unlock it for FTP'ing, which wouldn't be that useful to me as I'd forget to lock it again. Is it normal that I am transferring stuff with the HD locked and is it OK?

when you lock an xbox HDD you are locking it for use in that one xbox (so it can't be used in pc/ps2 etc.) it doesn't make any difference to the FTP'ing. but having it unlocked could get you banned from xbox live
