VF4 Evo question

OK time to show the fact that I am a VF newbie (this is my first VF game )

I am going through the training mode to get the hang of the game and the command window is showing a red arrow pointing down. What does a red direction arrow mean?

You may already have one, but it is well worth buying an arcade stick for this game. I got mine on Saturday and it has really helped me get better at the game.
