Yeah meto man (well getting into the newer versions) having played the original games (red, blue) and some of yellow. I never got into gold and silver that much but having chatted to a few people of the current GBA games i think ruby would be a good game to start with although if you wanted to play the originals, ebay would be worth checking out.

Get Pokemon Blue. It's amazing. The only one I really put some hours into. Gets very addictive.

Aren't the oringals being rereleased soon with extra features on the GBA?

Anyway, I played Blue constantly when it first came out and made sure I skipped Gold/Silver because I knew all the game basically follow the same structure. But even coming back to the franchise with Sapphire still left it too similar and I played it for 25 hours without it really gripping me. I think in a similar way to FF games, the first one you play is your favourite so I'd try the recent releases to see if you like them. Watching the cartoon can also help to immerse you into the Pokemon world.

The order they were released was
        GB
        Blue
        Red
Yellow - Same as above just you get Pikachu from the start
        GBC
        Gold
        Silver
        Crystal
        GBA
        Ruby
        Sapphire

The originals have the best and most memorable Pokemon but a pretty lightweight story moving the game along.

so what one should I play first then: blue? on the original gameboy., I havent played any Pokemon games at all so basicly Im looking for the most memorable game to be my first if you know what i mean.

what about the n64/gc games are they worth it as I dont fancy going back to the orignal gameboy(no b+w for me)

The n64 games are Stadium 1 and 2 and Snap. The Stadium games are basically just the battles of the GB games in full 3D and are no real fun unless you have the game. Pokemon Snap can be picked up relatively cheaply and has you going round a Pokemon park taking pictures for the professor. Sorry I cannot be any more descriptive but I have never play it.Colloseum on the GC is the same only it has a half hearted RPG attached but again you really need the GBA games to make the most of it. Avoid Pokemon Channel because it is a cheap rubbish cash in.

I think you should try and hunt down a cheap copy of Ruby/Sapphire which are usually going in the trading folder for ?10-15 because they are the height that the original collect-em-up RPG has reached and include new variations like the weather and more of a storyline that in previous games. I would say go for that.

I got Blue when it first came out and it does get bloody addictive. Didn't know anybody who had a Red or a GB for that matter so I went and bought another GB Colour, Pokemon Red and a link cable just so I could get all my pokemon on one file. Sad.

Blue is for the original GB. Am I wrong in thinking the originals are being rereleased as Fire Red and Leaf Green in the next few months so you may want to wait for them.
