Advice on Pricing of these PC parts.

Hi dudes.

I received the invoice through today from the guy that built my new PC. Some of the figures seem way out in my opinion but I thought it would be a good idea to check with all you knowledgable people. 2(or more) heads are better than one so they say.

Right ok I got the following stuff. It was basically upgrading the parts that were inside my completely fuxxorred PC so the total was the following..

Intel 204 Prescott CPU 2.4Ghz
Giga 1000 XP Motherboard,
1024 DDR400 Ram
80 GB Hard Drive
Powersupply Unit.

I know for a fact i have been overcharged on the HD at ?70. Also i didnt even ask him for a hard drive, i would have got a 120GB personally and iv seen them going for as little as ?40 on eBuyer / Dabs etc.

Materials - ?314.50
Labour - ?37.50
Collection and Delivery ?12.50

Now I'm ok with the labour and collection / delivery charges because I needed it doing and the company are located quite a way from me.

?364.50 Total
+ ?63.79 VAT

Invoice Total ?428.29

I did not expect to be paying over ?400 for what is potentially a few parts I mean you can buy a new computer for that. I was prepared to pay ?300 max.

Could somebody tell me how much the parts would cost to buy? I know that he should take a bit for himself for fitting it all and everything but I dont think the price is reasonable tbh.

What do you think I can do about the HD? He got me an 80GB HD for ?70 and you can get 120GB HD's for ?40 off eBuyer / Dabs. I notice that on the invoice it says "Goods remain the property of X until paid for in full"

Obviously iv been putting all my stuff on to the HD so it would be a nuisance to have to do that all again so what do you think would be best to do with regards to the HD pricing and should i just wipe it and buy one off ebuyer/dabs?

I would appreciate somebody putting my mind at ease because i dont think iv really got a good deal and hope some of you can help.

Just go to ebuyer.com aria.co.uk scan.co.uk dabs.co.uk - you can find out for yourself how much components should cost. Now add a a few quid for him building it for you. Indeed if you can get a 120GB HD for ?40 inc VAT, let me know where from.

Sorry, but you're just being bloody lazy - these costs aren't difficult to source and it sounds like a fair price to me.

Agreed - care needs to be taken when handling RAM, CPU and mobo.

In this case the mobo has everything onboard, so there wouldn't be too much to do. You don't even need to worry about master/slave on IDE channels anymore.

The biggest pain I find is linking up the USB headers, mic, headphones to the front of the case; the wire labelling never seems to match the mobo labelling.

I was grabbing pricing for cheapness the one I looked at was this - I could have gone for a ?5 jobbie

There you go Marty a nice 120GB HD for ?41.69 or ?48.99 inc of VAT. I fancy getting one of them myself but not sure what I can do with this HD that he got me because iv got all my stuff on it now..

I'm extremely tempted but then I'm not sure what to do with the one iv been supplied with and have to pay for..

If you're paying that sort of money though you're not going to be expecting top quality. I'm sure if you just wanted a cheap none gaming duron setup it would be adequate.

Might be fun to see who can build the cheapest system

Pc Chips/Elite avoid like the black death. Back when i used to work for a small pc shop, our boss persisted on buying these pecies of **** unless a customer has specifically requested another brand in the build. They have all sorts of Incompatibility problems, and the resources they assign cause conflicts as well as making the computer run like a dead dog. If you ask me you get what you pay for in most cases and if you want good stuff at a good price then over clockers are a good place to start.

That thing will perform so disgustingly poorly. If your getting a cheap system, get an AMD Socket A chip (i.e. a Barton 2500+), it will be faster, cost less, and wont heat your house up. Infact, right now, for any system, no matter what the price unless your doing encoding (which 99% of people are not), AMD is the ONLY choice.

You can get an AMD Opteron for ?125 at ebuyer. I reckon thats pretty sweet
for a budget system, probably alot more powerful than a Pentium or Xeon,
and won't heat your room up. Things get pretty hot already with the CPU
stable at 40 degree's, P4's though run at 80 degree's, I wouldn't like to own
one of them in todays 'modern' housing, you'll end up stinking like the sewers
of hell.
