    Pay as you go Broadband

Can't see this catching on myself but apparently BT are trialling this with 100 people, 5p a minute for every minute your connected (no monthly fee obviously)

So for example 10 minutes a day would equal ?15 a month, who uses broadband this little ? if you do, surely you might as well have dial up ?

Yeah you're right it is pointless at that price. I pay ?18 quid a month for unlimited access with ntl and I get more then my moneys worth as I leave it on overnight fairly often, so I'd end up paying something like ?400-500 a month on pay-as-you-go!!

It's either money pinching or the rate of dsl take-up exceeds their backbone increases to provide a reasonable service.

I'd be inclined to say both, heh.

If they started charging per MB downloaded then i reckon they might be onto something.

I pay ?25 a month for 750k Blueyonder but only ever use the net a tiny bit of XBox Live gaming and for viewing this and a couple of other forums. I'm sure i don't get full value for money but i'm happy to pay the monthly figure just so i don't have to wait 2 mins for every page to download.

I'm almost certain i'd be better off paying for amount of data i'd uploaded / downloaded instead.

They will be doing come 2005, at least if you go over your monthly cap - it's already in their FAQs - they'll be charging ?2 per GB (as has been mentioned in this thread previously). No doubt this will change, but as it stands that's pretty expensive.

If you're a low capacity user, per MB might be a better option than time online, but then again if you are a low capacity user, does BB really make that much sense?

              Regards
              Marty

Financially i'm sure it doesn't. But the speed is definitely worth the extra outlay. A pay per MB / GB system would give me the best of both worlds i think.

Seems Nildram offer this now, too. If you're below a threshold for time or downloads, you pay less than the flat rate fee for 512meg etc.

This is actually a good idea.

sounds very silly idea, it would also mean every house with a bt line would need to be connected to a adsl compaq server = big out lay for bt. i dont really care that much thow, just got my 1 meg line with bt today and its grrrrrreat! so much better than 512, infact twice as good!

BT want everyone on DSL because FRIACO cost a mint. Nothing more expensive than unmetered dialup. Last time I was there, said surfport24 (FRIACO) ports cost ?90 a month per port to hire from BT Ignite. I wonder how many you decide to rent given that your Anytime customers are paying ?15 a month? Too many and you don't make a profit, too little and folk piss and moan about engaged tones.

PAYG dsl is a good thing.
